My Korean friend invited me and a bunch of other friends to her house in California this spring break. I will be the only black person there (the rest are Korean.) They're talking about going to KTown and I'm really excited because I'm really interested in Korean culture/language, but also kind of scared because I know of all the history of racial tensions between blacks and Koreans there.

I will be with a bunch of Korean girls, so that makes me feel a bit better, but I also hear about all these knifings and gang shootings...If I'm walking down the street I'm not going to be cut or shot down or anything, right? Lol...cuz I'm too young to die :)

Well, it isn't a dumb question IMO. I know the history behind what happened to Latasha Harlins and how everything blew up with the Rodney King verdict. I still hear how there are shootings and knifings of both Koreans by black, and blacks by Koreans. I've never been there, so I can only go by stuff I've heard (most of which points to a violent place.) Sorry if it sounds ignorant :/

Koreatown isn't as safe as other parts of Los Angeles, but it's also a decent neighborhood and you'll be fine. I had friends that lived in that section of the city that I would visit often. The only problem they ever encountered was some car vandalism. It's a great part of the city so breath easy - it'll be great! Plus, I think your question is valid and a smart one to ask - there are definitely sections of Los Angeles that scare me to death and I've lived there for 6 years. For example, I will never go downtown at night alone - and even with people I feel uneasy. Even though I know the people that hang out on the street corners downtown may never hurt me, their yelling and taunting and crazy actions still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I used to take my friend with me to China town and she's 6'2" and black, and she was fine. I wouldn't stay in those places at night, just because it's not really a clean neighborhood, but in the day, the worse that can happen is people staring at you. Just don't think about it - you'll be fine. You're still in So Cal, it's not like you're going to the country. Just have fun and bring some $ - there's a lot of things to buy.

Yes you will be fine for the most part. K-town is very mixed about 20% korean 20% other asian 40% hispanic and about 10% balck and white each. Have fun in the nightculbs and shops and make sure you get around to see other parts of LA too.

around right here you basically positioned the white sox sport on the radio... that's how they comprehend you're one among them. perchance you may flow with "won't be in a position to touch This" so they're going to comprehend that they'd desire to no longer touch that.
