I'm planning on enlisting in the Naval Reserve for 4 years while I attend college, and then, with my degree, attending OCS and becoming an officer. Does my degree have to be in Computer Science, Engineering, etc or can it be what I want? Thanks. Oh, as as for what I do want, I'm looking at Doubling with Classics and Chemistry.

Technically? you can have a 4 year degree in underwater basket weaving. But the reality is.. they are looking for Engineering and Hard Science degrees with a 3.5 GPA or better to be competitive. Having a degree is NO guarentee that you will be picked up for OCS. Which communtiy you want will also be a factor.. it's easier to get into Suplly if you have a Business Admin degree, but of you want IWO.. better have that Comp Sci one or a heavy conentration in network security.

If you go with your current plan, you better have a lot more to offer the Selection Board.. leadership roles, Volunteerism, sports.. in other words, you must stand out head and shoulders above others in your perr group that have the preferred degree.

Just because you get a degree does not mean you'll be accepted for OCS. I've seen plenty of sailors with degrees rejected. I had a friend, an E-6 in the Naval Reserve, who got his Master of Science degree from Washington State University and he was turned down.

you can major in anything you want. but people who major in a technical field, such as engineering, science, or math, are more competitive. just because of the technical nature of the navy. but as stated above, there is absolutely no gaurentee that you'll be accepted into OCS. depends on what kinda officer you wanna be too. for example i'm shooting for naval aviator, so i'm going w/ aerospace engineering. but it's not a requirment.

The Navy will take virtually ANY bachelors degree... when I applied for the limited duty officer program, mine was in Pacific-Asian History. My brother got his in Bio-Medical Physics through NROTC at UC Berkeley.

Two of my favorite pilots had degrees in History, one in Physical Education, and one in English Literature.

The KEY is your GPA and your attitude and aptitude.

Oh, I'm sure if you happen to have a degree in Farsi or Arabic or Korean or Chinese it would be of interest to the Navy
