"we are only and only to feed them 1x per day 1/4 cup for both cats not even each"
That is starvation and animal abuse. A vet will tell you that they need 1/2 cup a day each or more depending on activity.
cats must be locked up in son's room 24/7
That is negelct!
The person sounds like an absolute freak. If you have had ownership of these cats, legally they are yours. I think you will win in court, especally with the abuse. I'm sorry your son is caught in the middle, but that is animal abuse, and cannot happen.

Check out that question there, it tells all about the statue of limitations on pet ownership.
Oh, just an idea, see if she will write down her "rules" for you and sign it. Then her animal abuse will be easily shown in court. Even if she doesn't sign it, if they ask if she wrote it, she will have to say yes.

I am a certified vet asst in St Louis Mo, and that is animal abuse. EVERY bag of food has the guidlines on in it for how much to feed your animal. If you(she) are worried about your cat getting too fat then feed it a an adult formula that is designed for that. Don't starve your animal. I would say they are yours. If nothing else, take them and hide them and tell her that local animal control came and took them due to their living conditions. Or, put your foot down and telkl her AND your son that if they are going to be in YOUR house than they will be going by YOUR rules. That should have never been started to begin with. I do not know the actual specifics but as soon as they were found out you should put have your foot down about the proper care of the cats while in your house. I would say that possesion in 9/10ths of the law. And they are in YOUR house.

She sounds like a nut case! It's your house & those poor cats need a loving enviroment. When your son & her are not there, treat them as your own. If she finds out & threatens to take them, tell her you're calling the SPCA. Sad to think she works for a Vet. Hope it's not my vet. You sound like a wonderful pet lover, so I'm glad at least the cats made to your house for some love.Good luck.

I hope I never use the vet she works at. This is horrible. Get witness and write everything down and keep all these wonderful comments from yahoo answers to show her she is wrong and knows nothing about animals nor does she love her cats shame on her. Thank god you are there to take care of these cats.

That's ridiculous. She does not "own" these cats. They live in your house and you provide their food and would provide the attentions and freedom they need if you didn't follow her "rules".
Where will she take the cats? She won't find someone else to follow her rules. The people who live in the house with the cats are the ones who set the rules. It also sounds like they are not getting enough to eat and that is cruelty.

Please be sure your son gets all the facts, that have been stated here. I hope you have let the cats out by now. When you were put in the middle, your best judgment was probably put at risk. Be assured, that if she is this controlling with animals, your son will be miserable in this relationship, if he is not already. You can free the kitties and your son by taking action now. Good luck

Please- don't listen to the crazy lady, the cats are in your house, treat them like your cats. Treat them nice. Leave dry food down for them, cats are not dogs. They know when to stop eating. Especially if they play, they won't really get fat. Please love and feed the cats. I hope she is never able to have any animals, ever, because she seems a little nuts.
