Perfect icing for sugar cookies-
1 cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
Stir the powdered sugar and the milk until smooth.
Beat in corn syrup and vanilla until icing is smooth and glossy.
If it's too thick, add more corn syrup.
Divide icing into separate bowls and stir in food coloring as desired.
You can dip the cookies, paint them with a paint brush or spread them using a knife or the back of a spoon.

When I am pinched for time, I buy plain vanilla icing in the can. Not whipped, though, because it does not spread as well.
Otherwise, I mix powdered sugar and milk together to make a more drizzly icing. The amounts are up to you. The more powedered sugar you add, the thicker the icing will be, and more milk will thin it out. Maybe start with a half cup of milk and add sugar until you get a consistency you like.
Edit:
Oh, yes. Cream cheese frosting is good, too.
Cream together 8 ounces of softened cream cheese with 1/2 cup of butter. Add 3-4 cups of powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Will spread better if you refrigerate it for an hour or so, first.

I like the kind straight from the can that hardens when you let it sit out. Another good one is to mix confectioners sugar and milk till it is kind of thick but still spreadable. Mix a hint of food color in it too so you have pink icing. I gets really hard once it sets.

In a hurry - canned frosting works great! Any flavor - you can even use food coloring in them.
