I recommend you go to your nearby barness and nobles and read or buy this book called : "Ultimate aircraft" by Philip Jarret, or just give them a call to see if they have it on stock, there's where I got mine, it gives you a very clean explanation relating aviation history covering from the fist flight of the Wright brothers to the built of Airbus A380 not to mention the nice colorful pictures posted in every page of the book.
*it also covers all of the topics you need for your project.

I'm not sure what to recommend, but here are two of the more interesting sites I know of:
http://www.aerofiles.com/
http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/
From WWI, search for the JN-4 "Jenny". There are other remarkable planes of the time, but it was a period of rapid development (all wars are) that saw power rise from 60 hp to about 350 hp. The Fokker triplane (Red Baron) and Sopwith Camel are two of the later models. The German Taube ("Dove") was an early low-powered reconnaisance model. It's very pretty. It's transparency/color allowed it to blend in so well with the sky that it might almost be considered a 'stealth' design. Not intentional, mind you.
The period between WWI and WWII was somewhat chaotic as far as aircraft development, and marked the change from biplanes to monoplanes. The only people really intent on developing air power were the Germans, who had been forbidden to do so but did it anyway. And so they came in with the Stuka dive bomber. The Japanese had the Zero. Allies developed a number of planes, from heavy bombers to fighters. The English Spitfire was superb, a light plane made of plywood with a huge engine. Formidable. A shame they didn't survive, simply because wooden planes don't have a long life. The Mosquito was another English glued wood design. A high performance fighter-bomber, twin engine and good in either role. Most American designs were all-metal, aluminum. The P51 Mustang, the Corsair and the Bearcat. Browse the Wright-Patterson site for what looks good. All the heavy bombers were aluminum.
You must include the DC-3 (AC-47) which was on the scene when WWII started and is still around, although as a relic now. It was still being used as a warplane during Vietnam. ("Spooky")
For commercial aircraft, the Constellation is an icon. It had its problems, but the design made it recognizable. The Boeing 707. A workhorse, like the military B52 (The B52 is still around, and there are probably 707s flying somewhere).
I'm not a pro in this field, but it's really neat. I don't know that I can be much help, but feel free to get in touch if you want to bounce ideas off someone.

it depends what kind of video project. i work for a private aviation firm so have lots of access to lots of different aircraft. There are so many beautiful well-known aircraft - but some kinds make different people excited for different reasons. My Dad loves USAF aircraft, where I love the more modern aircraft used for private "jet-setters". Do you want luxury, war planes, etc???
