The thing in the bible is nothing about masturbation at all. Onan was told to do impregnate his brother's wife. Instead he "spilled it" and was killed.
Gen 38:8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
Gen 38:9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
Gen 38:10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

That phrase is NOT in the Bible. Try looking it up:
------------------edit----------
They have several versions there that you can choose from.
========
(Genesis 38:9) - "And Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so it came about that when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground, in order not to give offspring to his brother."
Why did God kill Onan for spilling his seed on the ground? The reason God did this is not because Onan wasted his seed on the ground, but because Onan refused to perform his familial duties of producing offspring for his brother's. This was a great offense at the time. Now, we must realize that the culture was very different than ours is today. In that culture, when a man died and left no children, the next of kin was sometimes obligated to "go into" the wife and produce children. These children were then considered to be the descendents of the original late husband and would be raised as such. This way, the offspring would be able to take care of the mother, provide more people for the community, and thereby raise their own children, continuing the name of that family. Onan knew this and refused to take part in furthering the honor and name of the brother's wife and thereby also risking provision for her in the future. To this, God was very displeased and took Onan's life....

Genesis 39:7-10
God gave the commandment for Onan to marry and enter his dead brother's wife that she might bear a child in her dead husband's name (A practice that was abolished in the New Testament of Jesus Christ).
God gave this commandment because He was preserving a Godly bloodline through this union between Onan and Tamar.
Tamar's first husband, struck dead, the Bible tells us was wicked and clearly God did not desire that his actual seed be propagated, this is why God commanded Onan to offer his seed to Tamar in her dead husband's name.
Onan disobeyed this commandment and though he entered her, he pulled out and allowed his seed to spill on the ground. We see further that God struck him dead for that.
I don't believe so much this is an issue about masturbation and or "pulling out" as much as it is an issue of disobeying the commands of God.
This account also serves metaphorically to remind us that as Christians we should not speak on or of God's Word (The seed) carelessly. We are to submit to the Father and use His Word carefully for the purpose of propagating believers (Brothers and Sisters in Christ).

Usually this refers to masturbation,
and Yes it in a sin in one sense of the word (to miss the mark), because it makes us impure, and we have control over whether or not we "spill our seed". but as we look at it in context it is followed by the womans impurity because of her period and is preceded by the uncleanness from an STD, so we can conclude that it is not acceptable like the period, but it is not as bad as promiscuity.
In the case of Onan he simply withdrew as he climaxed(or pulled out as he got near and then masturbated), so that his brothers wife wouldn't get pregnant. He was killed by God, not because he pulled out but because he didn't want to raise children in the name of his brother.
also remember the wording changes form KJV-NIV-any other translations of the Bible.
hope this helps

That would be open for your interpretation, but I would like you to quote where it says that. I don't believe masturbation is immoral or a sin as long as you do it on a limited basis. Women especially need to masturbate to understand their bodies and how they work if they ever hope to have a satisfying sex life. Like they say, you have to learn to love yourself before you can hope for anyone else to love you

After Onan’s childless older brother Er was put to death by Jehovah for wrongdoing, Onan was told by Judah to perform brother-in-law marriage with Er’s widow Tamar. If a son was produced, he would not be the founder of Onan’s family, and the firstborn’s inheritance would belong to him as an heir to Er; whereas if no heir came, Onan would get the inheritance for himself. When Onan had relations with Tamar, he “wasted his semen on the earth” instead of giving it to her. This was not an act of masturbation on the part of Onan, for the account says “when he did have relations with his brother’s wife” he spilled his semen. Apparently it was a case of “coitus interruptus,” in which Onan purposely prevented ejaculation of his semen into Tamar’s genital tract. For his disobedience to his father, his covetousness, and his sin against the divine arrangement of marriage, not for self-abuse, Onan, himself also childless, was put to death by Jehovah.
Onan purposely prevented ejaculation of his semen into Tamar’s genital tract, he was to have intercourse with Tamar and have a child, but when the time came, believe you know what I am referring to, he withdrew and the semen went onto the ground instead of Tamar's genital tract. This is what the scripture is speaking about.
God executed Onan for ‘wasting his semen on the earth.’ However, interrupted intercourse, not masturbation, was involved. Furthermore, Onan was executed because he selfishly failed to perform brother-in-law marriage in order to continue his deceased brother’s family line. (Genesis 38:1-10) What of the “emission of semen” mentioned at Leviticus 15:16-18? This apparently refers, not to masturbation, but to a nocturnal emission as well as to marital sexual relations.

Nope............not in the Bible.
The closest thing you may be referring to is about Onan:
But O′nan knew that the offspring would not become his; and it occurred that when he did have relations with his brother’s wife he wasted his semen on the earth so as not to give offspring to his brother. -Genesis 38:9
He was put to death because he did not raise up offspring for his brothers house to endure.
