Look around your workspace.
See what needs doing that no one else is addressing.
Come up with a plan
Take the plan to your boss.

You also might want to look into volunteering somewhere to get a feel for other types of jobs

Also consider going back to school for a subject that interests you. Your employer may even have a tuition program to help you.

I know with having kids that it is hard trying a new career. The thought of a new field and hopefully liking the job and making enough money to cover the bills and so on. If you have the time try a 2nd part time job to see what is out there. I know time is a factor with having the little ones. You said that you were an electrician for 20 years did you stop because you hated the job, hors, pay? I would think getting back into the union and getting on job sites would be good as I know that there is great pay in elec. If not the other best suggestion is to go through a placement agency in your area. Find a head hunter that will work with you in the fields that you enjoy and see if they can find something that fits your wants and needs along with your skills.

Take a good look at the answers from abbs - kiska1016 - and booktender - as all together they give you a well rounded selection of options. Talk to your wife first about how you are feeling bored and ask that she help you make some changes at home. Have candlelit dinner dates with or without the kids, Go for a walk on Sunday just because, have a competition where she cleans one room and you another Have her wash the car while you fix dinner - you will be amazed at how making these strange changes at home will help satisfy your need for the relief of the monotony at work. They will also make the suggestion of the three listed answers more obtainable and let you see how you can make a dead end a soaring new start. Kick things up a notch and have a little fun.

There are a number of reasons you could be feeling bored by your job. You didn't indicate what aspect of the healing field you are currently working in but there are many options if you include all of health care. At 53 you are hitting the mid-life threshold where your awareness about the path you will take for the second half of life is rising to the surface. My suggestion would be to look at what your heart desires. There are many books out there to help you get on track. A good website you might enjoy is http://www.barbarasher.com. She has a newsletter you can subscribe to that might get you started in the right direction. Good luck.

Well....maybe its time to change direction again.....You a little way off retiring just yet...so don't get to panicky there....I would give it some thought...sit down with you wife/husband and discuss how you feel and see what comes from that conversation...some jobs have a boring part to them...but that would be hard to imagine in the healing field....but just speak to your inside and tell yourself....if you can't change jobs now...then you are doing this for your family.....and most important is you....you are doing this for you....Take some time by yourself and take stock of your life and see what you come up with....hopefully something....I don't know what to suggest now as you been through a fair bit coming clean and I don't know what other skills you have....so give it a try....try the conversation with your partner and then make a decision after giving it some thought....

Start small...something on the side that makes money for you. I have the same thing with Grocery...Im a manager, not going anywhere. I learned computers and have fun with it. This is definitely a self esteem thing. You need to get something you learned and did to be proud of whatever it is. Good luck. I care and your not alone.
