Don't play games.

If you want him to come to you, then ask him to. If he can and wants to, then he will do his best to do so If he simply cannot afford it but wants to, and you have the means to offer him the way, then do so and offer. He will decide if he's comfortable at this point in the relationship to take you up on it. If he does, great, I'm really happy for the two of you, enjoy the prom, and have a great memorable day together. If he can't, then don't get angry at him. He's not comfortable with it at this time. It doesn't mean that he doesn't care for you. Let him suggest or offer him a different way to spend time together. Unfortunately, you will have to do without him at the prom. Such is the nature of long distance relationships. It's hard.

Just my opinion.

Basic rule of relationships - Don't test people - they'll fail.

It's totally unfair to test someone when they don't know they are being tested, and the results never end up good.

If you want him there, and you know that he can't afford it, then just cover it. If you want him there, but think he can afford it, then tell him to make it if he can and don't be mad if he doesn't.
