It probably is the wides known.
However, an excellent point is made just a few verses away ...here:
"Now this is the basis for judgment, that the light has come into the world but men have loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were wicked. 20 For he that practices vile things hates the light and does not come to the light, in order that his works may not be reproved. 21 But he that does what is true comes to the light, in order that his works may be made manifest as having been worked in harmony with God.” - John 3:19-21
AND
"He that exercises faith in the Son has everlasting life; he that disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him." -John 3:36
Disobey the Son............will not see life.
it is called the Sin of Omission. You don't preach as he taught ALL of his disciples...........oh, yeah, every Christian is to be a Minister.......Not just the guy that gets the check!!!!

I don't know about that. But I do know it is one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible. Although it CLEARLYsays that God sent his Son to earth, there are those that still believe that it was God himself that came. The trinity doctrine has messed up many people's minds to what the Bible really says.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
I would say yes and another one of my favorites as well -
(Psalm 91:10-11).
" There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."
They tell of the Lord's Pardon and Love.

That one is very well known, however from what I can tell that 'let there be light' line in Genesis is probably even more well known. But then I may not count very well because I'm an atheist and I don't know very many christians.

The mainstream evangelists (eg Billy Grahm) place strong emphasis on this verse, and that is probably why it has become so well known. The verse is the key to eternal life.
