You will have an IV inserted in a vein in your arm. Sometimes that pricks a little, but if you try to relax and take slow deep breaths, it won't be bad at all. Any medication you need will then be injected through that line so you won't feel it.
Tell them you are nervous; they like to know how you're feeling. They can give you something that will help you feel calmer. In fact, they can give medications that erase your memory so you don't remember falling asleep!
Falling asleep will be unnoticeable. They may ask you to count backwards. Next thing you know, you'll be awake and the procedure will be done!

The injection will sting a little bit... they probably will give you an IV by which they can monitor the level of anesthetic. But it won't hurt. Then, they'll probably have you start counting backwards from 100.... if you get to 90 you'll be lucky. You'll fall asleep and not feel a thing... hear a thing... remember a thing..or dream a thing!!! In fact, when you wake up, you'll probably be surprised at how much time has passed.
Follow the doctor's orders about not eating... when you wake up, ask for crackers to help with any nausea you might feel from the anesthetic... but you should be okay. I didn't feel nausea at all, just a wonderful euphoria that made me VERY talkative.. (grin).
What will hurt will be the general pain from whatever surgery you are going through... stitches, etc. The doc should give you medication to help with that pain.
Good luck and don't worry!!! If it makes you feel better, another title for your Anethesiologist is "Gas Passer..." Gives you something to smile about...

Before surgery, a nurse will start an IV on you. Most now use a local anesthetic if you ask.
Once in the operating room, you'll be placed on oxygen. An anesthesiologist (or in the US, a nurse anesthetist) will then likely give you an injection (in the IV) to relax you. At that point, the lights will go out. By that, I mean that you'll next realize that you're awake in the recovery room. It's weird to realize this, but you're not aware any time has passed.

.I've had General anesthetic a few times.... the Injection will be nothing worse than a shot. "Going to sleep" doesn't "feel" like anything more than a deep nap, that you don't want to wake up from. Nothing to be scared of, or even nervous about. Relax, it'll be over before you know it, literally

Your mom can't go in with you, and the injection is like any other. The falling asleep part though is soooo cool. I totally thought I could fight it, but the doctor said count backwards from 10 to one, and I was out on 8. That part was really neat. Waking up though was awful. I WAS FROZEN! So I was shaking and stuff and they gave me a lot of warm blankets but it didn't help. Not all people have that though, I am just a little bit sensitive to it. Some people wake up and are a little drowsy but fine. There is nothing to be scared about, really. It is pretty cool all in all, and I HATE needles, so that is something major for me to say.

A general anesthetic is mostly gas, and it won't hurt, it will just be going to sleep. There is a little prick of a needle, no worse than a shot. There will be a weird smell, but by the time you notice it you will almost be asleep.

WARNING: the more times you are put under the less likely you are to come out of it!
But don't be scared, i know that sounds insane but they put people under over 1billion times everyday in the world, they are pros.
The injection won't hurt any more than any other shot.
When you are finally "out of it", you will be exactly that: "out of this world" and into your own world! Like being a floating drunk or a good high!

You may feel a little pinch from the IV needle, but it isn't excruciating. And once you're asleep, you'll wake up and think it's only been a few minutes. It WILL be ok, honest! You'll do fine. Good luck!

Don't be nervous. I have been put under a few times. It won't hurt. You will sleep, and when you awaken, it is all over. First time?? You will wonder what was the big fear was.
