I am taking our company first time to a tradeshow, and am looking for innovative ideas for a branded giveaway to people, something useful, but without spending a fortune (we are very early start-up).
This is an IT-centered tradeshow.
Any ideas?

Don't know what show you are going to but the last 3 Internet shows I've been at (Ad Tech, SES, Affiliate Summit) served beer (I'm not kidding) from a keg into a plastic cup (they weren't branded cups but should have been because everyone kept coming up to people with them asking where to get one themselves). Very memorable.
I think the CD opener is not too bad. The others I saw that I remembered was a cool business card holder, traveling coffee mug, Revenue Magazine had a cupcake with chocolate sprinkles on their cover and so their booth gave away cupcakes. . .But if all else fails you, geeks love those pens that light up!
I wouldn't worry so much about your logo, etc. being on a take-away such as a post-it pad or pen or whatever but something that draws people to your booth for a conversation such as the beer, cupcakes, etc.?

How about carry bags??? I hate walking around with piles of brochures, It would be great to have something to put them in. or a little plastic business card holder. or a small pen and note pad.
something that they will use after the show is a good idea.
I was given a business card that was inserted into a piece of hard plastic that had a blade attached to open envelopes. I still have it 15 years later. Think useful, long term and easy to carry or store.

All food must be eaten at the dining table unless its allowed somewhere else for a treat. Not so unusual but not as common a practice as it should be. We have practised this since our oldest was a baby and i honestly feel that it is very important to developing proper nutrion as well as manners and alot of children could benifit from this especially the ones whose parents allow them to wander around restaurants when they should be eating.

Why not give out usb / flash drives 1GB? Preload with your company's info and away you go.
Just about everyone is using them.

Little plastic CD-openers. May sound corny, but dont you hate opening those things? I bet it will get used. I got one at a trade show and I love it.

Stress balls are the best give aways, people tend to hold on to them. Make sure you make them sign up or get their card before you give anything out.
