Unless you take action to remove it, it will remain for seven years or longer, depending on the type of information it is.
However, if you don't want it there, have it removed.

I have heard that if you are planning to pay off a debt that is on your credit report, you can get it in writing from the place to have it removed, but you have to get it before you pay it and in writing. Now, I was once looking at some getting some credit and at the time only had about $600 worth of negative stuff on my credit report. Everyone told me to just pay it off and I would be able to get credit with them. I was taking that to mean that if it said on the credit report that I had paid it off it doesn't really matter if it was still there. So, I would say pay it and get something in writing from them, or keep proof that you paid and send that to the credit places if they don't update the account.

Negative info is in your credit report for seven years, even if you pay it off. It will reflect that the balance is 0, or paid in full, or something similar to that.
Unfortunately, it will remain.
Sorry.

Accurate negative information can legally be reported for 7 years. The only legal way to remove accurate information is if the creditor (the company you owe) removes it. Unless the agree IN WRITING before you pay, you have no leverage to get them to remove it.

negative items stay on for 7 years
that include lates ( those are not removed )
and balances that have been paid off ( as if they went to collections, then you are WAY late anyways )
legally they do not have to remove INACCURATE negative items
so as long as it accurate an updated, it stays for 7 years
