Bananas, among other fruits produce ethylene gas which helps them to ripen and therefore will aid in ripening fruits that are placed near it.

Bananas are often "gassed" in ripening roome before being shipped to your local grocery store.

Both bananas and apples will do this, they just emmit a gas that increases the ripening.
