I'm an adult...The reason I believe teens are in the dark is that we are all so uptight and afraid that we will be condoning sex that no one speaks honestly to teens about it. Many teens will have sex at some point. We should all know that. We need to educate them on the ways to keep themselves safe and not have unwanted pregnancies. Condoms and other preventative measures should be accessible and so should honest answers to questions.

Teenagers are notorious risk takers. There have been many explanations offered to address this including:

o A feeling of invulnerability (the "It won't happen to me" syndrome)
o Inadequate education (particularly sexual education where the information may be gained predominantly from their peer group)
o Inadequate frontal lobe development and consequently poor judgement
o Lack of life-experience compared with adults and consequently poor judgement

I'm an adult. Maybe they don't think teens can get pregnant the 1st time they have sex because their friends are having sex and they didn't get pregnant.
Also, maybe because they don't know anyone first hand that has had sex the first time and got pregnant.

Teens think they are invincible and that it's not going to happen to them.

Also, I've noticed that in this world of Internet, text messages and hardly any parental contact......teens do not get the facts on sex anymore. It's a lot of hearsay, myths and rumors that are incorrect. No one talks to mom and dad to get the straight scoop anymore.

I'm a teen. I think that 1., they might think that well.. the.. area is blocked off (hymen) when the person is a virgin so they won't get pregnant, and 2. (probably the more correct reason), it helps get gullible people in bed.. Sex myths take off pretty quick.

Parents do not take the time to sepak with their children and the sex education is left up to public schooling, friends, and/or media outlets. Parents need to take ownership of the situation and educate. Leave education to the governement and all you get are scare tactics and half truths (ie. the drug wars).

1) Most teens don't know much about sex.
2) Most teens cannot think beyond the here and now. They think they are invincible and things like that cant really happen to them.

They are in denial.
There are many, many other reasons but that's the simplest at this point.
Adults do the same thing, though.'

Because most schools teach abstinence and don't give teens the sex education they need to prevent pregnancy. The high school I graduated from teaches abstinence and it defiantly did not work.
