I have tried to remove the forearm for refinishing. I can take the ring that holds it to the barrel off but the ring that holds the barrel and the magazine together will not fit over the front sight. The front sight does not seem to come off. I dont want to disassemble the entire rifle so is there an easy way or trick that I am missing?

that 30-30 you have should be disassembled by a gunsmith. that is one of the few faults a winchester model 94 30-30 has. it will probably require removal of the point site whitch really should be done with a mechanical press.

ok at the end of the 4 arm, you will see a band, it will have a screew, remove it, an pull the band off ,then slide the 4 arm off, the sight can be remove by useing a brass punch,,,it slide in a dove tail notch
