I think it is that we are more aware and are given statistics so it does seem like more. My mum who is 82 was telling me that when she was young a few did die only it was kept quiet as people thought it was contagious and a dirty word, even when my dad died with it. The word cancer was whispered or mouthed, there used to be a comic sketch years ago with Les Dawson and the word change referring to the menopause was mouthed. this became funny as it was very true of older people a dirty word. So no I don't think it has got worse it's that we are more aware.

Per head of population and given the fact that western nations have a greater life expectancy, cancer has actually decreased and morbity rates as a result of cancer have also decreased. It is impossible to give a definitive figure since cancers are corrolated as to type and likely prevelance (ie breast cancer in women, testicular cancer in men, leukemia in children) so there are no overall figures in which all cancer related illnesses are pooled.

Most everyone would like people to believe Cancer is more prevalent now then ever. All that has increased is the ability to diagnose it. Do you know how many people died in the 19th century from "consumption?" That was just a fancy way of saying they have no idea what it was exactly, but it was bad usually some form of cancer.
