I want to go to school for pre-med and then go to medical school but i can't decide what type of doctor i want to be. I want to have a family, and I want to have a life outside of work, but i would love to work in a hospital. Any suggestions, or any doctors that can give me an insiders advice?

I'm a fourth year medical student at a very family friendly medical school. I actually had a baby during my third year of medical school. Having a family and being a doctor is VERY do-able. Sure, there are some specialties you'll want to avoid, but there are plenty of options. The training years are tough, but after that you can really decide how many hours you want to work -- even work half time. Popular careers for doctors with families include family medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and careers that involve shift-work such as emergency medicine or anesthesia. I'll be going into family medicine after I graduate in May -- I plan on working in a clinic part time, seeing patients in the hospital, and doing lots of small procedures in the office. It's a great mix for me -- plus I have the option of cutting back on work hours when my kids are younger. (Check out mommd.com)

It sounds like you have a few years ahead of you before you have to make a decision as to what you want to do with a medical school education. I would suggest you wait and see what interests you and what will fit into your future plans. You certainly don't have to decide today do you? I went though a bunch of different disciplines before I settled on forensic medicine. If you work in a hospital, you're probably going to have to work weekends and holidays. Just wait and see. When you have experienced some of the work, then you can make an informed decision.

My suggestion would be to start the pre-med portion of your career. Along the way you may find that one career that calls your name. There are so many places to work as a Doc in the hospital...it kind of depends on what kind of Medicine you like....fast paced (possibly surgeon, OB/GYN, Surgeon or ER/Trauma?)...or do you want more hands-on (Oncology, Geriatric, Ped's)? Just some thoughts.
