Why do I not speak in tongues? Sin? Unbelief? I use to attend a UPC church and I liked it there. It was the greatest place in my life. However, I have never spoken in tongues. There was some pressure for me to get this gift. I wanted to quite my job and seek it full time but the church would not encourage it. Why not? A job can wait, what would I not do belong to Jesus, I can not get to heaven without this gift, I'll be your brother.... I was a mess. I was in a panic. I was worried I would die without this gift and go to the lake of fire. That is brief. I put allot of effort into seeking Jesus for this gift. Today I have just quite. I do not go to any church. I got hurt in that church and no one was there to help.

Wow. Thanks for all those answers. That was possible the best source of answers I have ever had on this topic. What I wrote was brief. But it eventually worked out for good in some ways. Romans 8:28. Amen.

You don't have to speak in tongues but it is so edifying if you do. And since it's a gift, there's nothing you have to do to earn it and nothing you can do to make it go away once you've gotten it. It's just something you can do any time you choose. The other day at work, i was feeling really down so i started praying in tongues...i had no idea what i was praying but i ran into this person who knew i was a christian just by looking at me !! and then idk all this crazy stuff happened and i ended up having a sweet day. It's kinda crazy but it definitely does edify you! And it's an amazing way to praise God.
Don't give up man and don't sweat it either....
God loves u just the same!!
God bless

My friend, the UPC is a cult. And you were taught wrong about the gifts of the Spirit. St. Paul asks, rhetorically, "Do all speak in tongues?" The answer is clearly "no".

Stop worrying and find a Christian Church - and leave that Jesus Only, Pentecostal nonsense in your rear-view mirror. And don't look back

It is by grace through faith that you are saved and not of works.
Even though speaking in tongues is for today and many Christians seek this gift--it can become a work!
You are not saved by works. If you have been born again--saved that is all you need for salvation. In order to grow in your Christian faith gifts are given. Do not allow some legalistic folks keep you from attending a church. Find a Bible believing Church and go there.
I willl be praying for you.

If a man shall not work he shall not eat. One who preaches must earn their living through preaching and teaching the Word.

You had good intentions but you were wrong as far as quitting your job.

You hurt yourself and your integrity.

You dont speak in tongues because you rely too much on worldly affairs and not Godly living. The church was right. Aplologize and get yourself straight with the Church then go to GOD with repentance.

I am sorry that I cannot sit down and write what I feel is a truly satisfying answer because I'm pressed for time. But what I'll do is advise you to look for a book entitled "Reasoning from the Scriptures", published by Jehovah's Witnesses. That topic is discussed there. I'm sure any one of Jehovah's Witnesses can get it for you. I also wondered why I couldn't speak in tongues, and I was SO glad to find an answer from the Bible. All the best!

Well you must be happy that you are not speak in tongues because this means that you're still sane!!!! Have you heard any pentecostal speak in tongues? How many phonemes can you recognize in their speaking? 2? They are not talking in tongues they are screaming inarticulate voices. And most times they repeat the same screamings. They are pitifull . If God exists and Christ too then they would go to hell straight they are like this church of the revelation with the false prophets. (Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29))They are condemned. ( I know a greek friend of mine that he become atheist from the pentecostal church. and many others from internet. )

It's probably because you're stressed about it. Relax.....Seek the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I was baptized a full week before I spoke in tongues. It is a work of the Holy Spirit and nothing we can do of ourselves. Get close to the Lord and it will come, when the time is right. I sing in the car and sometimes find myself singing in tongues without even thinking about it anymore.

God bless.

When I received the gift of tongues I had prayed and asked God to save me with the gift as evidence. It happened for me, not saying that it does or will for everyone. I also think that if you focus too hard on getting the gift the you really don't realize when you have it already. Do not quench the Holy Spirit with reliance on self.

First your church is wrong for trying to teach you that is the way to get to heaven, there is no Bible proof you must speak in tongues to be save and there is too much proof to say other wise. Yes many people did speak in tongues in the book of acts but show me any Scripture that says you must. In fact Paul teaches tongues is the least of the gifts and you would be better off speaking 5 words of understanding than tongues;
1 Corinthians 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Pentecostal churches have the truth so twisted you cannot reason with them. But I can give you my strongest and best example; Numbers 22:28
And the LORD opened the mouth of the @ss, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
If speaking in tongues is a sign of being in heaven then Balsam's donkey was saved?
Do not get me wrong I believe in tongues and have spoken myself in tongues but it is no sign of going to heaven, also I have met too make Pentecostals that did not believe the Bible to say that because they spoke in tongues they are saved.

The Bible teaches that tongues were a lessor gift and only for a limited time. Love is far greater or to prophecy. A person is saved by Jesus not by their gifts. Seek the Lord and trust His work on the cross not your own works or gifts.
