It means that you love someone no matter what they've done in the past or present and that you love them for them

It means you would love the another no matter what. With NO conditions...they could lie, cheat, steal, kill, abuse you, etc and you would still love them.
It's a fairy tale concept with re: to romance. About the only real unconditional love that exists between people is parent to child. Another example (not between people) is a dog and its master. The dog will tend to love you even if you starve it or beat it senseless.
There are, of course, exceptions.
