our departmental policy is there will be no visible tattoos outside the class A dress uniform. This was a hot topic with the veterans because a lot of them had military tattoos on their fore-arms so they excluded the class-a short sleeve shirt as long as the tattoos were in "good taste". What the heck is good taste? pretty much no nude chicks or dudes riding on your arms, no tear drops on the face :) etc etc
But for the most part they have to be covered and hidden

No having Tattoos doesn't exclude you from the police. They have the same rules as the forces, they must be of a certain size, in a place that can be covered, and if on the hand they would have to be discreet. A facial tattoo or a full sleeve would not be acceptable!
More people have tattoos and it's becoming less associated with certain 'types' of people, bikers and ex-cons for example, with luck the stupid prejudism against them will stop, and people wont post silly questions about who should or should not have one!

It fairly relies upon on the dep., the city council, the manager and some different elements. i'm a police officer in Utah and that i have 0.5 sleeve tattoos. besides the undeniable fact that, branch coverage calls for me to cover them up. On my short sleeve responsibility shirts, the sleeves had to be longer. it is like this with maximum departments in Utah. My spouse's cousin who's an officer in Washington state says that a number of their officials have finished sleeve tattoos or maybe some going up their neck. So his particular dept. does no longer have many or any guidelines on the problem.

Many have tattoos during their teens and twenties. Why should that action exclude any person from any job if they have the capabilities to carry out the necessary duties, I am sure Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Fireman, - could go on and on. Having a tattoo is a personal choice which many regret in later life.

In the UK some forces did not accept people with tattoos showing others did. With the amalgamation of forces with different policies it became impossible to enforce so was dropped but obviously if a new applicant applied and had unsuitable tattoos displayed his chances of selection would be nil.

I know many officers with tattoos. Our service policy states that all "body art" must be covered, so anyone with a forearm tatoo would have to wear a long sleeved shirt.

Police officers having tattoos are based on department protocol, meaning some departments allow it and some don't, the department I work for allows us to have visible tatoos. Although the state police are not allowed to.

I would imagine as long as they don't display offensive or politic comments it is no problem, otherwise it's like saying you cannot be in the police force if you have a birthmark.
