Women are not all the same. What does she like?
Fancy restaurant or candle light meal at home? Nice.
Romantic movie? Nice.
Chocolate? He better not.
Flowers? Nice.
Diamonds? Not my thing.
Do the dishes, read to the child and put him to bed and let her have peace and quiet for a night of doing what ever she wanted to do? Now that would be a gift!

I would love anything that shows that he put some thought into it and tried to be romantic. It truly is the thought that goes into it and the effort that counts. The handwritten message in the card usually means more to me than the present itself. Jewelry is nice... doesn't have to mean engagement. My boyfriend gave me some nice diamond earrings for Christmas that were reasonably priced, and he picked them out all on his own, and I loved them. He bought me a digital camera for my birthday, and I loved that, too. Tickets to a play or musical, especially if that's her thing and not really your thing, is a great idea. Or concert tickets. But really, the best thing would be if she came home and you were dressed up, had flowers on the table for her, and had a home-cooked meal in the oven with a bottle of wine on the table. Rose petals on the bed is a nice touch, too... show her that you went OUT OF YOUR WAY to be super-romantic.

It depends who she is and what she likes.
But you will not have to spend lots to impress her unless she is da spoilt type who is into materialising herself with overpriced purchased goods.
But i believe a poem, a personalised song or a declaration of your undying love like a romeo and Juliet theme will get you into her good books.
But you could just do what my uncle does for his wife, they married for 10 yrs this yr, but they have know each other for 15 yrs, so every Valentine's day he hides her fave flower; Calla Lilly's, which each flower is to represent each month they have been together and he hide them one by one in place where she will find them. then he give her the additional one of this yr to her when she returns home from work to find him to have cooked a dinner for her.
He does the same for their wedding anniversary, but only for the yrs they been married and takes her on holiday to the place they were married at; Singapore, where they first met.
To think people say romance is dead.

It depends who she is and what she likes.
How much can you afford?
Personally I would love a week-end away Paris, Venice etc..
But I have never got that in 20 years of marriage!
