This is a randoma nd maybe a silly question, but in the movie "Phone Booth," when Stu calls the police, but can't talk directly to him, they hang up. If one were in a situation where he couldn't talk on the phone to the police, but only dialed him, would they still come out to help or just not come? And they can track a cell phone call, true?

Thanks.

it may depend on the state / county you are in BUT if you call 911 here in the state I'm in, and don't say anything, they will DEFINITLEY come knocking at your door in a just a minute. I bought a used computer one time that had the 911 virus on it and when I booted it up, it dialed 911 but of course no one could say anything. It wasn't but a few minutes they come knocking on my door wanting to search my house.

just an additional comment:
most people are unaware that with the 911 emergency system, it is designed to activate even on a partial number. So if you dial 9 and then leave the phone open it will assume you wanted 911 and connect you to emergency service same as if you dial 91 and then long pause it will emergency connect. For some reason we get a lot of false calls from people trying to call out of country. Something with the series of numbers to certain countries will prompt 911. Our dispatch tries to do a re-contact of the number and if they can confirm it was in error they will n ot dispact a unit, if not then you get POlice.

If you dialed 911, they should be there within 5-15 minutes. Yes, they can trace a cell phone though they can only be sure of the vicinity of the closest tower. I don't know if this works but I would try entering a mile marker or exit ramp number and not hanging up until they arrive. Maybe Morris code through tapping the phone or grunting.

If you dial 911 from either a pay phone or a cellphone and the agency you called cannot verbaly connect with you, the standard protocal is to have an officer/sheriff go to the location where the call originated, or in the case of a cellphone, triangulate the location of the party calling via, G.P.S. . And yes they can track a cellphone. Most Law Enforcement Agencies have this ability now as it's been around now for approximately 10yrs. or so.

One morning, I answered the door and a policeman was standing there - he said he had come because of the 911 call I had placed. I explained that no, I hadn't called, but he insisted that I had. At that moment, my 2-yr-old daughter came out of my bedroom. I realized that she must have picked up the phone and hit the 911 speed dial. The officer believed me when I explained what must have happened and he wasn't angry, but he was very concerned that something may have happened where I couldn't speak. Once he saw everything was OK, he left.

I'm glad he did that, in case there really had been an emergency!

I can only speak from experience. I knew somebody in college that accidentally dialed 911, and the police did come. Sometimes on some phones you have to press 9 to dial out, and that's how it all started for her.

i think they are able to track some cell phones now. and yes the police do come here if your silent. i accidentally dialed 911 before and told them it was an accident and they still came. but any a place like new york I'm not sure if they can afford to waist time on something they don't know for sure

if they know the location of the call, they do come just to make sure nothing is wrong, which is why you shouldn't call 911 unless it's really an emergency... the only way they can trace cell phone calls is if the phone has a special GPS chip in it (this doesn't necessarily mean that it has a navigation system in it)... check with your cell phone provider to see if your phone is GPS enabled.

In my particular county, in Washington State, our 911 system can trace land lines to addresses, but it does not work with Cell phones.

If you call 911, and say nothing, or hang up, the police will be dispatched to check things out.
