A farmer wanted to sell an old boat, so he put it on the front lawn with a sign that read, "For Sale." A few days later, a group of three fishermen came to the house and said, "How much do you want for the boat?" The farmer said he'd take $30, so each fisherman give him a $10 bill and they left to go catch some trout.

A few hours later, the farmer said to himself, "Gee, $30 might have been too much for that old boat. I think I'll give them some money back." The farmer called his son in the house, gave him $5, and told him to go find the fishermen and give them the money.

While the boy was walking to the lake, he thought, "How am I going to split this $5 among three men?" Well, he decided to give each man one dollar and keep the extra $2 for himself. (If his father didn't know, he wouldn’t care, right?)

So, think about it...after getting the refund, each fisherman spent $9 for the boat ($9 x 3 = $27). The boy kept $2 ($27 + $2 = $29). Where did the other dollar go?

wow most of you guys that answered did not read very carefully.. she's saying that basically sense each man got a dollar back it would then mean that each fisherman spent only 9 dollars on the boat.. (sense intially they each spent 10 dollars on the boat then each one then got a dollar back... which means they each only spent 9 dollars on the boat...) sense theres 3 men she multiplied 3 x 9 to get 27.. but the boy only kep 2 dollars soo... 29 plus 2= 29 where did the extra dollar go?

hmm i believe this would be a mathmatical mystery ha. anyother way of solving this would make it turn out to 30 dollars.. (ex the boy took 5 dollars from the farmer which meant the farmer has 25 dollars. the boy gives a dollar to each man which is 5-3 and then he has a left over of 2 dollars so.. it would make sense that way sense 25+3+2 = 30 ) hmm there must be ughh i dont know you got me stumped haha.

The $27 mentioned includes the $2 the boy kept. They ended up giving the farmer $25 and the boy $2, resulting in the $27 total price. The solution never mentions the $3 the fisherman got back. $27+$3 = $30.

no. there was 30 spent to begin with. the farmer got the $30 but gave the son $5 so (30-5=25) the fishermen got 1$1 each so $3 and the boy $2 so $3+$2=$5 and $25+$5=$30

The best way to approach this is to think about who has money left. The farmer has $25 dollars out of the original $30, each fisherman has $1 (total of $3), and the son has $2. When added up, you get 25 + 3 + 2 = 30.

This is soooo old and it comes back every once in a while in different forms.
Please listen to what the answerers said and I hope you are really just saying it for fun. I have been listening to this joke/riddle for more than 15 years and some people still insist that there is one dollar missing.
You can't add the remaining 2 dollars to the 27 dollars they paid because it is a part of the 27 dollars. U can think of it like this
27 - 2 = 25 dollars. 25 +1+1+1+2 = 30. It's meant to be a riddle for fun and that's all.

You did the math wrong. 25+2+1+1+1=30

Your thinking too hard. It isn't like that. Then the boat would have to be 24 dollars!
