I've got an 03 Mégane 1.9dCi, which I bought new nearly 4 years ago.
Its had a couple of small electrical glitches, but nothing serious has gone wrong (as yet).
The looks still please me every time I open the garage door, soon followed by the hands-free locks and keyless start - real convenience. Fuel consumption currently stands at 49.5mpg over 45,000 miles, and is still improving.
I've know a couple of people from work who had real trouble with their Méganes, but both bought 5door 1.6-petrol models nearly new, whereas I bought a 3door 1.9 diesel new (all 3doors are built in Spain, might make a difference to reliability, the 1.9 has a Nissan gearbox - the Renault gearbox in the 1.6 is a problem item - and buying new meant it wasn't abused before I got it).

The Honda Civic will definitely have a better resale value as well as better reliability in the end. Check out this blog post on KBB resales. Honda & Acura own the list.
