I just had a root canal done on the upper front tooth. The worst part of it was dealing with the pain from the abscess. Once I was on the antibiotics the pain went away.

The procedure its self was relatively painless. The only part that hurt was receiving the local anesthetic, and that was due to the location of the tooth (gum is relatively thin over the front teeth). But there was no pain during the procedure nor when the anesthetic wore off. Your jaw may hurt from keeping it open for 45-60 minutes but no more so than it would during a regular cavity filling.

Everyone handles procedures, such as root canals, differently. Personally, mine did not hurt AT ALL. The only odd part was that it was quite time-consuming (2 separate appointments - 45 mins each). I didn't feel any pain, I only had a tiny bit of soreness from keeping my mouth open for that long. I seriously almost fell asleep during it! Have some good daydreams in mind and try to relax. You'll be fine. :)

A little bit, but it is mainly the shots before that are the worst. However, after you get the shot, it makes it numb so the pain is minimal which would be a million times worse without the shot. The worst part is having to keep your mouth open the whole time during the procedure which takes about an hour or so. Also make sure you go to the bathroom before the procedure because it seem like you are sitting there forever!!!

not usually if you have a local anaesthetic. They may do if you have an infection, but you should be given a course of antibiotics to overcome this before any treatment starts. I have had four, and they are less traumatic than a filling, they are just a nuisance as they do not complete the treatment in one go, you have to keep on returning. I am currently half way through the treatment for one.

If it helps, I have a phobia of dentists, and I find the worst part just getting there and waiting to be seen. Once I get in, it's never quite as bad as I build it up to be!!!

Hope this makes you feel better. Goodluck!!!

Not usually. I've had two done, the first one was just fine, after the novocaine shot i didn't feel a thing, but the second one was done by a different doctor and i had to be given 6 novocaine injections and it STILL hurt, not to mention i felt pretty crappy after all that numbing. It depends on the cotor i think.

IT DEPENDS ON THE PERSON BUT IVE HAD 2 ROOT CANALS. ONE DIDNT HURT ME AT ALL AND ONE DID. EACH TOOTH HAS FROM 1-4 ROOTS. ONE OF MY TEETH HAD 4, AND THATS THE ONE THAT HURTED. PLUS MY TOOTH WAS REALLY DECAYED, SO THATS WHY IT HURTED. BUT MY OTHER ONE WAS AS EASY AS CAKE, AND DIDNT HURT, JUST THE SHOT HURT A LIL! =0)

It didn't really hurt to me. The worst part was getting numbed. It felt a lot like getting a filling.

No. They are no worse than getting a filling.

I've had two done, and was fine even after the novicane wore off.

You may need an Advil though.

Only when they poke a nerve. Sometimes the novacaine shot hurts. Its not a fun ordeal but well worth it after.

During the procedure your mouth will be anesthetized. You wont feel pain but it may be a bit uncomfortable because your mouth has to stay open while the dentist places his drills, hammers and screwdrivers inside your mouth.
