i know this is a weird question but i hear people calling them birds is that ok to do?

You state that you hear people doing it. Do you see them being hauled off in cuffs? OF COURSE you can call military planes "birds." It is slang, but people do it, just as you observed. My dad was a 20 year Air Force man and he called 'em birds. AGAIN, he knew they were jets, but ... people like their slang. Now I'm going to rest my dogs in my easy chair and maybe catch some Z's. After that, maybe I'll cut a rug or rip a big one or pinch a loaf or eat a lugey or whatever else that strikes my fancy. :-)

There's no rule against it. The term is also used for choppers and even satellites. As long as you make yourself understood there's no problem.

They can call them Swans, Sea Gulls, or Cars with wings if they want to.
