Sin is the result of mortality - not vice versa. You're talking about Original Sin, a doctrine that was based on Jerome's mistranslation of Romans 5:12. Death is not the penalty for sin.

Why put it as an either/or question? It's both/and.
When God told Adam that on the day he ate from the tree he would surely die, God meant that Adam would most certainly eventually die, and not drop dead on the spot as some critics think. In Hebrew it meant "dying you shall die" which means the physical body begins dying and wasting away, as a reflection of the reality of spiritual death that occurs at that instant. That's what happening to all of us now too. However, the Bible talks about a resurrection of the dead, and that's the time when the spirit/soul of man will unite forever with the body so that man becomes whole again instead of being disembodied, but will face destiny in either heaven or hell.

Come on now, there is no hell, and original Sin is a dogmatic religious nonsense invented by the church to gain money through fear. God does not punish. period. There is more evidence for Aliens than some guy called Adam, Hell, Karma, etc etc. These false notions of Anti-Christ, Demons and such, are all crap. Ever think about the fact that maybe your aware of your fate before your born. A baby can still experience if only for the moment, his/her life. Life is a repeating cycle of death and rebirth - not sitting around in heaven or hell for ever. The world will have no religion in 100 years - people will wake up from the brainwashing religions and take back their beauty and power. Unity, Light and Love.

Both.
Physical - because Adam and Eve sinned and because they did we are not immortal and must die at an appointed time.
Spiritual - because it is appointed to Man to die but once a physical death.
After you die a physical death here on Earth - if you have not accepted Jesus as your Savior or were very evil or both - you die a spiritual death.
After the Great White Throne Judgment - if you have not accepted Jesus as your Savior or were very evil or both - you have an eternity of endless torment in a lake of fire that's known as Hell.

Your question is somewhat invalid... But, I will answer this for you to understand. The punishment of sin is indeed physical death...
I'll take you example of Adam to explain it, but first I want you to understand what Sin is.. It is going outside of God's will. Most sin (lust, sloth, gluttony) is to please the flesh.
Now, Adam (who didn't live forever) took of the fruit of the tree of Knowledge when he was told specifically not to. He went outside of God's will so he sinned. But if you read on you'll see that the tree was Everlasting life was kept out of man's reach (so no one will live forever in the flesh). The punishment for man's sin is that we would surely die (physically). In the New Testament, you'll learn that FLESH is sin. Hince putting fleshy (physical) desires over God is a sin.
On to your part about Hell. Those who choose not to believe go to hell. Don't let people lead you into believing that all who sin go to hell. If that was the case - then why bother doing good? We Christians still sin. The difference between us and non-Christians are that we whom believe in Jesus are saved.
Now you may think "Is that all?" Hebrews 10 tells us yes. Plus, if you look at the world, you will see how people are having a tough time believing. They know God (they complain about him everyday), but they can't see themselves following after Jesus.
So, to sum up your question. Punishment for sin is a Physical death. Those who don't believe will experience a spiritual death.

It is both, infants die because sometimes the sin you commit affects others. Fetal alcohol syndrome, fertility drugs, genetic issues being carried forward, the choice to have a high risk pregnancy, enviornmental issues such as corporate polution, we may never know all the causes for death, but we can say without a doubt that they all lead back to sin.

They are both through the first sin death and sin literaly entered the world...Adam did die and so do we all. but physical things are examples of spiritual things.Babies do not die because of their sin but because sin and death are in the world and definitely are covered by the grace of God from spiritual death. Simply saying because someone sinned they die is not correct many live very decent lives and could aquire a disease but it is not anything they themselves did wrong but because sin is in the world. When Adam ate of the tree God had forbid him to eat sin and death entered the world it is the reason Jesus came and he did pay the penalty of death for us but we are still in a sinful world and in our sinful flesh but we by faith have a new life but are still subject to being in a sinful world and it is by faith that we say we are made new through the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ we can can by faith be dead to sin having the penalty of death paid. By faith we say the man of sin is nailed to the cross wiht him and raised back in his glory to worship God in spirit and truth and not by cerimony and traditions of man and law. The victory over sin has been won and we are waiting for the return of Christ for the literal new life that is to come where there is no sickness and death.

It could be both.
It was for Adam because he WAS perfect, but he died, so evidence shows that it was physical as well.
As to infants ... We are responsible for one another, including sin. If EVERYONE stopped sinning, maybe death would go away. I doubt it though. I think sin has warped the universe.

the wages of sin is death.
Adam died because he sinned against God.
people do not go to Hell for sinning.
they go to Hell because they made that choice.
they chose to refuse God's Gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ and the associated eternal life with God in Heaven and, instead, chose to go to Hell.
all are sinners because we all were born with a sinful nature.
that is why all die, including babies.
John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

The human body is a temporary holding place for your spirit. Your spirit continues to exist when your body dies.
So, when anyone's body dies, their spirit goes somewhere, or does something for eternity.
About infants, and people who never had the opportunity to believe in Jesus, God is fair and just, and He will judge based you on what you were given. Nobody at the time of their judgement can say it wasn't done fairly.
