This is one of the few jobs that you will love to hate. You will ownder why the hell you take the abuse. That comes from the public and from the department. The pay is not that great for what is expected of you. You are criticized, scrutinized, second guessed, arm chair quarterbacked, almost everyone can tell you how to improve on the job you do, everyone can tell you how you could have better handled yourself and the list goes on.
Yet, most cops could not see themselves doing anything else. For true cops that believe in what they do, I believe it is innate to them. We were wired somehow to believe in standing up for the people who can't for themselves. Even through all the criticizm we receive, most cops believe in defending the constitution and people's rights. There rights to enjoy a day out at the park with their family or go to the grocery store and feel reasonably safe.
That gives us a sense of satisfaction even if the results of our work are not tangible ones like a construction worker who builds a house. he can look at his days work and see what he has done.
There are a lot of heroes out here and I thinkmost are humble when it comes being called that. The true testament to that statement was directly shown on 9/11 when without hesitation the police and fire were running to what the inevitabley knew was their doom yet they still ran.
It has got to be in your heart to believe in something so much that you are willing to give your life for a total stranger. Cops make the ultimate sacrifice almost everyday somewhere in the U.S. and it barely makes national news yet let one of them do something wrong and from Seattle to San Franciso to Miami to New York you will know there name.
So my question is, Why would anyone want to do this job?
It goes far more than getting away with a speeding ticket or free coffee.
We believe in what we do and not too many professions do that anymore.
Good Luck Godspeed and to all my brothers be safe out there I got your back and I know you got mine

It depends dramatically on the department. Some departments have great benefits, and pay in the high five figures. Mostly people become cops because the day-to-day work involves something the individual wants to do regularly, like:
help people in crises
catch criminals
solve critical problems
give people a hard time
get in fights
drive fast
chase people
and the list goes on. Obviously some of those reasons are better than others, but don't kid yourself that some of the less admirable ones don't motivate a fair number of cops. All of the above are realities of a cop's day-to-day work, and when I was a cop, I met cops who were motivated by each one.

When I worked military police, a supervisor asked why anybody wanted to be a "real cop." My response was that if you had to ask...then you didn't have the "drive" to becoming an officer.
Most officers pay are extremely poor therefore it's NOT the pay! In my humble opinion, if you asked any officer why they became one...they'd tell you because they have a genuine desire to help those who can't help themselves. There are some who are young that still think they can change the ways of the world...but experience will show that more often than not...you have an uphill battle putting bad guys in jail and keeping them where they belong!
There's an old saying amongst many officers who feel that an appropriate motto for law enforcement is "We fight what you fear!" This is not to sound egotistical but just a way of life in law enforcement.
I enjoy my job because I do something to help those in my community making it a safer environment to live in. I enjoy helping those who need help....gives me a good feeling inside when I go home. The pay is pathetic but the non-monetary benefits are overwhelming!
Oh yeah....screaming down the road with those neat blue lights is cool too!
Hope this helps!

I did go through the process to be a police officer but had been knocked back for having my own opinion and they didn't like that. They told me i was too young at 25 years of age and that i didn't have enough experience working with minority groups. when I actually did have experience in dangerous situations. I told them I treat everyone equally, i know of two sections of law in Australia they tell me i would have to treat children and Aboriginal & Torres strait Islanders differently. They told me i wouldn't be able to question a muslim women if she was suspeted of shop lifting. they told me i would have to question the husband. Well i proved them wrong after researching on the website in support of Muslim women adapting to Australia, they are able to be questioned without the authority of a man and was also quoted in a sydney newspaper. My opinion has now changed of the QLD police force, sorry i mean police service now, it is all about politics not the people anymore. Its all about protecting the criminal not the victim, as soon as a police officer does anyhthing such as put his hand on a gun or restrain a ciminal a little too roughly they are scrutinized by CMC and the public, it is unfair and this has put me off from being a police officer i now work in the medical industry.
