We are trying to work with what we have and its pretty difficult. I have 70's style orange countertops and darker wood cabinets. What color do you think would look good on the walls? We think white is the only color, but I want some color. Also, what color would you use for cabinet handles? I think silver, he thinks black.

Tough colors to work with huh? Orange counter tops! Hmm... Are you living on the Brady Bunch set? ;o)
Well, orange and khaki have always been fantastic compliments to one another. You could paint the walls in a rich putty color that will cause the orange counters to "become" an intentional accent color. Pick the orange color up in the artwork on the walls.
The warm tone of a putty color will be a very nice accent to your cabinetry. And if the cabinests are dated like the counter, black would be a better choice for hardware than silver in this case. Contemporary silver hardware on an older cabinet will look out of place. Sorta like putting silver buttons on an old brown dress. My favorite look would be an aged bronze. An updated look.
Whatever you do, avoid white walls at all costs!

I would go with a soft yellow and red. Both tie into the orange factor and give you variety to work with. We've been sofa shopping lately and I have noticed a lot of 'sunroom' type furniture in this combo. The handles need to be a rustic brass. The silver is too shiny and the black is to dark. The yellow would match the orange and the red would modernize the room. Good Luck

A bright yellow or gold would work with the orange and the dark wood . Macy's online had pretty Tuscan-look dinnerware sets with yellow, orange and green, you could design a look around something like that. Very cheery and festive! I would use an antiqued copper or bronze on the cabinets, but the black wouldn't be bad either.

What about a soft yellow? I think either choice for handles is nice, you can also get those clear ones in fancy shapes now again, too.
