Does anyone use 'speedwriting' anymore?

I'm left-handed and know the Arabic alphabet too, which makes me wonder if its a big waste of time. (Since Arabic is written from right to left, lefties can write in the Arabic alphabet a lot faster than in English.) I don't have a laptop and I just want to take faster notes in class. I want to be able to exchange notes and speedwriting is at least halfway decipherable.

yes, many secretaries still use speedwriting and/or shorthand.
