The porcelin crown is 837 and a stainless steel is 180. My dentist won't do a stainless steel on an adult, but another dentist (that my mother uses) will. This is on a tooth that will be slightly visible when I smile, but the cost difference is huge.

Is one REALLY that much better than another??? Series answers only please. Right now money is a huge issue in my life and I don't want to spend 837 unless I really have to.

You really don't want a stainless steel crown, they are not permanent, long term, go with a PFM (porcelain fused to metal). A stainless steel crown is supposed to be used only on children or as a temporary.

You get exactly what you pay for.

There is a reason that stainless steel is so cheap. Because it's CRAP. No one uses SS crowns anymore. The guy may do them but porcelain is the way to go. Looks like your tooth, doesn't give you a terrible metal taste in your mouth and it holds much longer than SS (that's why they don't use them anymore). They don't use metal fillings anymore, either for the same reasons.

you want to get the porcelin crown! it may cost WAY more--but my mom got stainless steel cavities when she was a kid and just last month she found out that they had to replace them with porecelin. NOT because they were tacky- just that she had worn them down soooo much! i would get the P.C. but if you can't afford it that is a big diff. between P. and S.S.
you choose! It's YOUR money!
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

Why not just get the stainless steel crown, and if you want to later, when money is not such a factor, get the porcelin one.

Never heard of a stainless steel one. When I had one done they offered me gold or porcelain. I'd check to see how much gold is, I think it's cheaper than porcelain. Just another option.
