We've just moved into a house with the 70's green vinyl flooring in the bathroom. It's in great condition but it's ugly! We want to do an under the sea theme for our son, and I would like to paint the floor to look the bottom of an ocean floor.
We're remodeling the kitchen right now- so putting a new floor in the bathroom is not in the budget for a year or so.
Please don't just say yes or no- I'd like to know reasons. Thanks!

Christopher Lowell used to do this all the time on his show. Remember him? He always used oil based paints to do the job. And, inorder to insure a more lasting finish, prep work is a must. Cleaning, light sanding and priming are essential.
This website has detailed instructions that save me a lot of typing. But, it is exactly what Christopher did.
I've seen the finished product in a few of my clients rental homes and it makes a good temporary fix.

Yes, you can paint a vinyl floor. You must make sure it is very clean (free of wax). You can use a bonding primer made for painting on vinyl to make the paint stick. Use a paint that can withstand a bathroom evironment. Your local home improvement warehouse can tell you which paint is best. Make sure you let the paint and primer dry completely before you use your bathroom.

Go through this home and garden post for a question about painting vinyl siding. Someone answered by mentioning a certain kind of paint for painting vinyl flooring as well and he/she said they had done it with great success. This was posted earlier today... for sure.

Good Luck and I hope this helped

I would think green would work with the undersea theme. Remake the room and if the floor still doesn't look right. Prime with Kilz, two coats and use latex High gloss. It is not ideal, but it will stay one with light foot traffic, maybe by the time it needs painting again you can replace the flooring.

You could paint it but it will show traffic patters and wear fast. Why not just purchase some throw rugs and brighten up the floor until your budget permits installing a new one.
