I was reading something on the internet about training your cat to walk on a leash, and that once they are used to it, they really enjoy their walks, just like dogs. Is this true?

Yes, cats can learn how to go outdoors with a harness and leash. However, you can't walk them like you would a dog; they just won't go for that. Instead, you follow your cat, but you set boundaries around your yard.

The first thing you need to do is get your cat used to wearing a harness. Put the harness on your cat for a few minutes and let your cat walk around the house. Increase the length of time each day for a few days. Then you'll be ready to take your cat outdoors.

The experience may be overwhelming for your cat at first, especially if there's a lot of noise where you live. Don't try to force your cat to walk around; let your cat explore on its own terms.

Absolutely. My two cats are leash-trained and go walkies with me (one at a time) outside. The older and more experienced one actually likes to trot along te sidewalk with me like a dog. He is also the more adventurous and will walk around the block with me for up to half an hour or more. When he's tired, he just sits or lays down on the sidewalk then I have to pick him up. I do take precautions when I take him out on the sidewalk (I do it only very late at night when traffic is gone and al the dogs have been walked). The younger one who is less experienced just likes to walk around in the yard. It is a good way to ensure that the cats get their daily dose of fresh air and exercise. They are so disappointed when it is raining and can't go out for their 10 - 20 min walkies.

My neighbor has her cat leash trained and the cat loves it. You must start as a kitten. We got our cat from a shelter, and she would have nothing to do with a collar. She does go on walks with me and stays with me the whole time about 3 to 4 feet behind me. Sometimes something catches her eye and I'll have to call her name, then she catches up. I live in a very rural area, I wouldn't do this in a town, city, etc.

Very true. I had a cat when I was on the road with my ex boyfriend trucker. I started off with a yarn crachet type of leash. It's lite. I started with walking it around the house once it got used to it inside we'd go outside and eventually to the semi truck. But be careful as they can get spooked easily.
