Rome and Italy in general is experiencing a tremendous boom in tourism. High season, the busiest time, but also the best time for weather is: May-mid June, and September-mid October.
The weather is usually spectacular during these times. Summer is exceedingly hot, and the entire city empties of Romans in August. Spring can be great, or it can be typical of the winter. Rainy and damp. That is what it is now. Ok if the sun is out, but a disappointment if it's not.
Best hotel areas for north Americans are around the Coliseum, Via Veneto, and Spanish Step areas.
There are two kinds of restaurants in Rome. Those for tourists, and those that Romans go to. If you go into a restaurant, and you see people like yourself, it's a tourist restaurant. Meaning overpriced and lower quality. Romans are quite demanding of their restaurants, and those are the places you want to eat.

Ok the best time to go to Rome is in the fall. right now it is a bit chily. For a hotel I recomend the Hotel Ceasir. Check my spelling. It is near the Pantheon. Restuaunts. There are so many. But if you find the ceasir hotel there are a lot of good resturaunts around the Pantheon. And try some Gilato. Its itialin ice cream. There are a lot of choices. But dont rent a car. It is hard to get around and there is no parking. Have the hotel drive you if its really far. Otherwise walk . And another reason the ceasir hotel is so good is because it is near everything. all the popular ruins and go to the parks they are pretty nice in the fall. anymore questions, i would love to awnser them. Even though people say go during the summer dont. If you want a real Itialin experience go when the tourists avoid the city most. IN THE FALL.

It's a great walking city especially if you stay near the major landmarks. I recommend the Hotel Portoghesi. It's 3 stars, so the rooms and baths are a little small, but it's very charming and it's as well located as it gets. About E190.00 per night , which includes breakfast. www.hotelportoghesiroma.com I've stayed there twice. It might be a little chilly this time of year, it's relative to where you are from. Spring and fall are the best times to visit. You won't have any problems finding good food, at any budget. It's definitely one of my favorite city's. (or google hotel portoghesi)

I loved Rome.
This time a year is a liitle cool but still beautiful and probably fewer people.
It is a great walking city because you can walk almost anywhere and you definitely do not need a rental car. The buses, metro and trains can take you anywhere.
We stayed at Hotel Trevi. The rooms were nice but the staff was only okay.
All of the restaurants are amazing. There is not one I wouldn't recommend

Hi!
Rome is certainly one of the best walkin cities I had ever stayed. If you have a map, no problem! I used the Fromer's guide (printed), you can find all the informations there about hotels, restaurants, suggestions by days for visitations, suggestions by money to spend, and so forth!
But take care with young girls at the streets, asking for money; they use coloured clothes, 3 to 5 together, and can assault you fast!
Hugs!
