First, sexual addiction is a mental illness -- but it is often associated with other addictions (and thus other mental illnesses).

To answer your question directly, I believe that it is much more common that sexual addicts have [other] mental illneses than for them to just have the problems of sexual addiction alone.

Any addiction is a mental illness. If you are addicted to sex, your mental illness caused that. You can't be an addict and NOT have a mental illness.

Addiction is due to not being able to handled your emotions and that causes you to act out. It could be something from your childhood that traumatized you--being sexually molested, alcoholic parents, death of a parent, etc.) that can be part of the factor for whatever your addiction is. The other part of addiction comes from genes. If your parents were addicted to something, there is a really good chance that you will be addicted to something, too.
