USMC snipers are an elite force to say the least. They operate in very clandestine operations, and in every front on the battle field. You are a sniper, to preserve the lives of those you serve with. It's as simple as that. One shot... One kill.
Sniper school starts with a visit to the US Army sniper school, and then on to advanced Sniper School USMC. Both schools are heavy on the physical, mental, and emotional requirements to be a sniper.
You'll learn the art of camouflage, stalking, and finally the shot. Most definitely, one of the hardest tasks set before any infantryman... and one we cannot live without.
As any knows taking a life is something you will have to live with, and never forget.

RE:
What does it take to be a USMC sniper?
What qualifications/training do you have to go through to become a USMC sniper? How long is the training? I would prefer answers from people who actually were snipers in the military or people who know a lot about the subject.

Marine Sniper school is by far the more superior school than the Army Sniper School in Benning. But the skills learned afterwards by the snipers from both branches makes them equals. A school is just a school, its the on the job training afterwards that really matters. Just like anything you do in civilian life. There is a school the Army has, SOTIC (Special Operations Target Interdiction Course) out of Fort Bragg. It is open only for 75th, Special Forces, and other special operations forces. It is the most superior sniper school. And produces skills that Marine scout snipers and Army snipers did not even know existed.

First thing you have to do is join the United States Marine Corps. Go thru boot camp and you better be the best marksman when you graduate. Then be assigned 0300 Infantry, I think you can join Recon or STA from any MOS in 0300. Only after all that's accomplished would you even be remotely close to becoming a sniper. After that you would have to take the indoc to be considered for trying out. Snipers need longevity and endurance more than strength. Extreme mental prowess.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to be a Marine Sniper? What you're saying is that you want a job in the Marines that assures you of a position in which you can kill people. Is that what you want or do you just want to feel special?
You do not join the Army, Marines etc. with a guaranty that you can be a sniper. Snipers are chosen for their marksmanship skills. You must be in the top 1% in marksmanship to even be considered. Can you hit a target 300 yards away? Snipers can hit targets 1000 yards away. It's not at all easy to do.
As a Combat Veteran I can assure you that regardless of what you do in a war, you will not enjoy it. It's not the movies kid.

Pleased to see "Darryl" mentioning Gunny Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, who had 93 confirmed kills in Korea and Vietnam and probably as many as 350.
Hathcock was a country boy who grew up hunting so he could eat. He was good long before the Marines got him. Same story can be told about Audie Murphy in WW2 and Sgt. Alvin York in WW1 (although neither was assigned as a sniper).

I had a friend who went through Sniper School in the USMC... He said his uncle got him in so I guess you have to know someone...
I do know the training involves running around with some guy following and yelling at you at each target... They say helps the student know how to seperate the outside noise so he can take a better shot. Also you have to learn how to make shelters that are camo with the sticks and leafs you find in your area. You learn how to dress your gulie suit. Learn how to stay in one spot for like days....

look for a video by the history channel. They are very picky with selection, but the SAS has a harder sniper school. Marines snipers is a very hard one to get into, though.

A high tolerance to physical discomfort, The Patience of a cat,
Little or no conscience.
Can you crap in your pants, stay in the prone position for 2-3 days wait for an eternity for 1 shot, and then live with the kill.
