The monster is usualy the two legged animal on the other end of the leash! This breed is already band in Denver colorado, please don't make it happen in your town. They are sweet loving animals that just want to please. That's why they fight, to please their master. They were in an obedient test and collies were the most aggressive. I don't know about you but pit bulls are NOT monsters.

.No they are not monsters. You can have a savage dog of any breed, but none of them has the potential to maim or kill like a pit bull. The German Shephard may bite more people, but the attacks are not near a savage as a Pit Bulls. They just don't have the strength. Pound for pound, a Pit Bull has 2 or 3 time the strength in it's jaws than a dog twice it's size, with the exception of maybe the larger fighting breeds, like the Tosa Inu. And the are very tenacious, never giving up. That is why the jerks enjoy the fights so much, they will not give up until they are dead. Period... I own both breeds, and yes, my Shephard will bite a stranger in a minute, and I trust my Pit a whole lot more with people than I do the Shephard. But, I took extra care when training my Pit, because of the reputation of the breed. My Shephard has a nervous disposition, and even after training, is not as controllable as I would like her to be. So I am more careful with her.

This subject has been done to death. No matter what we do, there will always be jerks who raise these dogs to fight, neglects them, keeps them on chains, and then makes the news because it kills one of their children, and there will always be the responsible owners defending their breed. So what can you do?
I love my dog, but I am a realist, and know that in the right situation, anything is possible with a Pit Bull.

I agree the problem is with irresponsible owners, that could be said of owners of any breed though.
The term pit bull does not mean just Am. Staffs... It includes several breeds including APBTs, Am. Staffs, Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, Canes, several other breeds and any dog that resembles a pit bull.
Not all types/breeds of pit bulls are used for dogfighting. Only APBTs are as they are the only one who is GAME. They are also the only breed to be bred to be specifically not people aggressive. People biters were culled. You couldnt handle a dog in the pit that bit, and if he bit his handler, the other handler or the ref, it was an immediate loss. Those are the only differences between APBTs and all other breeds of dogs.
People want to hate the pit bull type dogs because that is what they are told to do. Most don't know anything about the breeds. The media can have a bad effect on just about anyone... You just have to be smart enough to know what is BS and what isn't.
Edited to add: For those thinking other breeds, especially little ones dont kill...

To say other dogs don't kill/attack is pure ignorance. And, I can't believe how many ignorant people there are. Morons...

Ah, I read the answers to this question and want to strangle the ignorance of some people. ALL dogs are capable of attacking a person, but only pit bulls are blamed. If a pit is raised properly, there is no problem with them. Responsible owners of pit bulls do their research before owning one. These dogs need to be understood before they are brought into someone's home. They are a very high energy dog and need a special person to raise and train them. As someone mentioned, watch the Dog Whisperer sometime, he has a pack of very well-behaved pit bulls. The only monsters I see are the jerks who train these dogs to fight and the ignorant people who bad-mouth the breed without knowing anything about them.

Pit Bulls historically were the only dog extensively trained to NOT bite man. They are wonderful dogs.......it's always the person behind the dog. I own American Bulldogs and some bloodlines have pit in them WAY WAY back there and they still are mistaken for pits. All Bully breeds are in trouble due to ignorant people who are quick to point a finger instead of investigate the real truth. They are not aggressive......they are dominant.....there is a difference. Dominance causes aggression and it takes responsible owners to stay on top of the situation and educate the public! So no they are not monsters......people are

That sly smile, those determined eyes, that unwaning pleasure to please... the mere quality and characteristics of the APBT have evoked more human emotional, rational, and irrational response than any other breed that exists today. By no means are these dogs people-haters or people-eaters. Their natural aggressive tendencies are toward other dogs and animals, not people. However if they are properly socialized they will not even be aggressive with them. These are truly quality companions for quality owners only! The American Pit Bull Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. The American Pit Bull Terrier can be willful and needs a firm hand. They are generally okay with other pets if they are raised with them from puppy hood. For the most part they are very friendly, but not recommended for most people. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Originally used as fighting dogs, the powerful American Pit Bull may go for the throat of strange dogs. A minimum of training will produce a tranquil, obedient dog. Socialize very thoroughly when young to combat aggressive tendencies and be sure to keep the dog under control when other dogs are present. It has given outstanding results as a guardian of property, but is at the same time esteemed as a companion dog. When properly trained and socialized, this is a very good dog and a great family companion. Unfortunately, some choose to promote the fighting instinct in the breed, giving it a bad name.

I was raised in Chicago where must pit bulls were used to fight and were breed to be aggressive, but I still believe it is the breeder/owner who makes the dog what it is. I have known all breeds of dogs to bite. Pit bulls can be wonderful dogs. Anyone ever seen The Little Rascals???? That is a pit bull, which use to be referred to as the nanny dog.

No I do not, any breed of dog can't hurt you. I live in a heavily populated area of Pit Bulls and have worked with dogs for many years and I have yet to see an aggressive Pit Bull. Other breeds yes, Pits no. Just my observation.

Banning Pit Bulls would be like banning cars because people get killed in car accidents! Who's responsible, the car or the driver/manufacturer? Any car can be deadly in the wrong hands or if built with defective parts. Same thing with dogs... Any dog. Pit Bulls are no more responsible for the way they are bred, raised and trained, than cars are responsible for the way they are designed, built and driven.

Simply put, the best argument against breed bans is that they are costly and ineffective. Breed bans are often a knee-jerk reaction from politicians who want to say they are "doing something", after a highly publicized dog attack (of any breed). This is a useless exercise. What kind of message are we telling abusive and irresponsible individuals when legislation makes the dogs pay the price for their action?

Criminals habitually break laws, so having an "illegal breed" may indeed be attractive to undesirable individuals and entice them to breed and sell more "illegal dogs". If their dog is confiscated and killed, they don't care. They will just get another one because BSL punishes the dog, not the owner.

On the other hand, law abiding and responsible owners, whose dogs love people and have never done anything wrong, can see their homes invaded, often without a search warrant, and their beloved family member dragged away (in front of their children) to be killed. Not because the dog was unstable or mean, but simply because of its breed. Meanwhile, the owners of truly dangerous dogs (of any breed) escape punishment because their breed is not targeted by legislation and therefore believed "safe".

A 10 Lbs Pomeranian killed a baby a few years ago... Obviously a problem with that particular dog, not the breed. "The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby, who died shortly afterwards. ("Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, October 9, 2000, Home Edition, Metro Section, Page B-5.)"

Because of a serious lack of regulation in dog breeding many dogs inherit defective genes and are sold to irresponsible owners. A breed ban will not resolve the problem. This non sense will continue with the next macho breed and will become an endless race between breed specific legislators and unscrupulous breeders.

A Pit Bull breeder was shut down last year because Pit Bulls were banned in Topeka, Kansas. All his dogs were seized and destroyed just for being the wrong breed at the wrong place. The man now breeds "African Boerboel", a rare breed from the Mastiff family, completely unknown to legislators. Unlike American Pit Bull Terriers however, who are known for their love of people, Boerboels are serious guard dogs bred specifically as protectors. A poorly bred and irresponsibly owned Boerboel might actually be more dangerous than a poorly bred and irresponsibly owned Pit Bull. This is what a breed ban has accomplished in Topeka...

Another good example is the Pressa Caniaro. 10 years ago no one had heard of those dogs. We now find them in local shelters, picked up as strays in the streets. Ironically, the breed became popular after two of them killed Diane Whipple in California - By portraying them as vicious and blood thirsty beasts the media has turned them into the new "dog du jour" among gangsters and thugs.

Here are some facts to consider:

"Pit bull" is not a breed, but a "type" that encompasses several registered breeds and crossbreeds. Therefore, statistics that claim "Pit bulls" are responsible for some percentage of attacks are lumping many breeds together, then comparing that to other dogs that are counted as individual breeds.

Breed identification is left up to victim and witness testimony, and is often wrong. Due to negative press, biting dogs of almost ANY breed have been called "Pit bulls". Try this little quiz for fun: Find the Pit Bull - See how many people you know can pick out a pit bull from pictures, let alone in the middle of an attack.

Search the Center for Disease Control site. Even the CDC supports the position that irresponsible owners, not breed, are the chief cause of dog bites. They have done studies that indicate that the most "dangerous breed" of dog changes with popularity and reputation.

Search the American Temperament Test Society. Pit bulls have an average score that beats even the "ultimate family dog", the Golden Retriever.
Positive pit bull press - This site shows not only what the breed is about, but the difference responsible ownership makes. Many of these pages are "Pit bull rescue makes good" stories. This site features, among other great stuff, rescue pits that are saving human lives in Search and Rescue and US Customs Service.
The Diane Whipple case. One of the first times the owner has been held responsible for the actions of their dog. Note that the breed involved was the Perro de Presa Canario (Canary Dog) from Spain, yet the brunt of the negative press again targeted the pit bull, an all but unrelated breed.

The message is clear; lets stop targeting the dogs! Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any strong and large dog. They just happen to attract more irresponsible and abusive owners than any other breed... Do Pit Bull haters really think that a global breed ban would convince criminals who use these dogs as weapons to own Basset Hounds? And if they did, how long do you think it would take before Basset Hounds start making the news?

A breed ban will only remove Pit Bulls from good people's homes and leave them in the hands of animal abusers who couldn't care less about the law... Better think twice before supporting such measure...

Hope this helps.

i hate that ppl are still ignorant to the fact that its not the breed but the immature owners who cause this breed to be so hated. Pit bulls were not breed to fight other dogs or be aggressive towards humans. It is the owner who instills the trait into the dogs. There were orginally breed to hurd bulls. Hence the name "pit bulls". i own a pit mix and would never even consider owning another breed. We have 3 small children at home and our dog would never hurt any of them. They are great family dogs. They can take the abuse of even 3 small rowdy children. Its about socialization and correct training. If you treat them like killers then what can you seriously expect. If they are trained to kill from the time they are born of course your going to have problems but if you love them, socialize, train, and teach them right then you never have any problems. Please realize that there are not bad breeds but bad owners who make the problem worse. We need to take a stand against owners who dont properly train the dogs and forbid them from owning dogs. Let people who know what they are doing handle them.

Nope, I pretty sure they are dogs... yes every breed can fight, but not all have the same power or drive. That's why wackos generally choose "pit bulls" for fighting. Its not even the kind of dog you're most likely to get a bite from. People should ban dalmatians, shelties, collies and dogs in purses if they're afraid of bites.
