Yes... you can eat raw eggs... However, for young children, elderly, pregnant or people with weakened immune systems, I would skip the raw egg and look for another recipe.

Just make sure it's the freshest you can find in the supermarket... and make sure the eggs look clean.

The food bourne bacterium is usually on the surface of the shell.

I believe that eggs in commercial packing plants are cleaned and sanitized before packing and shipping.

So use eggs that are fresh, clean and shells uncracked.

You should be okay.
However, I wouldn't make it a regular habit, especially if you're in the Northeastern US where salmonella is slightly more prevalent.

From the USDA website, link below:
Should You Wash Eggs?
No. When the egg is laid, a protective coating is put on the outside by the hen. At the plant, government regulations require that USDA-graded eggs be carefully washed and sanitized using special detergent. Then the egg is coated with a tasteless, natural mineral oil to protect it.

If you encounter a recipe that has raw eggs, a safe alternative is to use eggs that have been pasteurized. You can usually purchase them from the grocery store next to the egg substitute (they'll be in a carton).

To avoid Salmonella poisoning (I had it twice), I'd rinse the egg in very hot water for a minute before you use it. Make sure to wash your hands good too.

People ate raw eggs (I think back in the 60's or so) and they really didn't get sick nor did they die.
