Scripturally, death means death of the soul, or in other words hell.
Your soul no longer has access to the creator and is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

What you call hell is the Lake of Fire right? That is called the second death or a spiritual death. If a person refuses to be born twice then that same person must die twice.. God explains over and over how serious He thinks sin is. He says the soul that sins must die. That sounds serious to me not some same stupid thing... Jim

That's simple.... Follow me...
1st, let me state the obvious:
The Old Testiment states that the punishment for sin is death.
The New Testiment confirms (via Paul's letters) that flesh is sin.
SIN: Going outside of God's will.
*Now, the factor that people fail to realize is our Spirit. Name all of the sins you can and you will realize that it involves satisfying (or bringing gratification) to the flesh. Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, & even "the love" of money (because you use it to satisfy the appearence or make-up of the flesh)
With that said, the punishment of sin is death because the flesh will cease to exist. That means only your Spirit will be left. If your spirit was not in sync with God's will, then it will be cast to Hell.
C'mon. You got to go deeper than that.

Death is punishment. Seperation from God is the result.
Take this for what it is:
God made man perfect.
We disobeyed.
We deserve death.
In order to enter heaven, we must be blameless and sinless, because Heaven is a perfect place.
We are all sinners.
Thus, we all need Jesus.
Those that do not have Jesus cannot enter heaven. They are not 'sent to hell'. They just aren't perfect through the blood of Jesus.
They are then seperated from God. That's called Hell.
Hell was created for Satan and his fallen angels, not us.
Satan hates us because we are made in the image of God.
And thus, Hell is eternal torment. From Satan, not God.
Salvation is a gift.
Does this help Chip?

Below is from this website:
http://www.momof9splace.com/hell.html
Now take your Bible and turn to Revelation 20:13-15. There we read, “And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” The Bible says the wicked shall be turned into hell, and whoever is not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. The outline of this message is very simple and it asks one simple question. Do you believe in Hell?

My own answer is it says eternal death; your spirit will eternally die. In a physical sense we think of death, to expire. That's it it's over, no more. But that is not true. Through your physical body may come to an end...You spirit will continue to die, eternally...
Think of your physical death as the cut-off point, you can't change your mind about God after your body dies, so the spirit dies too. But if you know & understand the Good News, you may not have to eternally die but have life eternal! That sound like pretty Good News...If you are still curious read the book of Romans in the New Testament in the Bible!

The first death continues into its completion in the second death.
The FIRST DEATH was the spiritual death of Adam and Eve by their disobedience to God and their belief of the devil instead.
UNLESS a person is REBORN/REGENERATED, the first death continues on into eternity.
It sounds like you still believe the devil about the love which God has for you and the rebirth that He will gladly GIVE to you by His Spirit. The devil keeps putting thoughts into people's head that God is the mean one and he, the devil, is the one who will give you good things.
If you believe that, then ask yourself , "how happy are you with your life?"

To understand what's going on with Death and hell you need to research just a little so I will guide you to some scriptural thoughts to help you understand these words? As you say death was and is the punishment for sin. Adam sinned an lost his everlasting life.
Jesus died or was murdered on a stake to give you and I another chance to regain that everlasting life that Adam lost.
(Psalm 146:4) 4Â His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish.
1 Corinthians 15:20-21) 20 However, now Christ has been raised up from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep [in death]. 21 For since death is through a man, resurrection of the dead is also through a man. So from a scriptural point then Death does two things for us. (Romans 6:23) . . .For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord. 1st thing: So when we die we have payed for that Adamic sin that Adam caused us to have. 2nd thing death is reversible if we choose to follow God's requirements.
What are his requirements?:John 17:3
Hell? (1) The King James Version rendered she’ohl′ as “hell,” “the grave,” and “the pit”; hai′des is therein rendered both “hell” and “grave”; ge′en·na is also translated “hell.” (2) Today’s English Version transliterates hai′des as “Hades” and also renders it as “hell” and “the world of the dead.” But besides rendering “hell” from hai′des it uses that same translation for ge′en·na. (3) The Jerusalem Bible transliterates hai′des six times, but in other passages it translates it as “hell” and as “the underworld.” It also translates ge′en·na as “hell,” as it does hai′des in two instances. Thus the exact meanings of the original-language words have been obscured. in other words Hell means Grave, the place of the dead.
In the Hebrew Scriptures of the Bible the word “hell” is translated from the Hebrew word sheol′. This word occurs 65 times in all. The King James Version of the Bible, however, translates sheol′ 31 times as “hell,” 31 times as “grave,” and 3 times as “pit.” The Catholic Douay Version of the Bible translates sheol′ as “hell” 63 times and as “pit” once and as “death” once. In the Christian Greek Scriptures the word “hell” is sometimes translated from the Greek word hádes. Both the King James and Douay versions translate hádes as “hell” in each of its ten occurrences. to make things short if you read Revelation 20:13,14 you will see that Death and Hell will be done away with. in the future.
I hope this is helpful?

to many of us, we think of death as when life leaves our body, which is separation. Death truelly means separation, and our punishment is separation from God, which is hell. physical death is separation of body and soul, but spiritual death (what God is talking about) is separation from God. Jesus speaks of the physical death in the New Testament as "sleeping" like in Matthew 9:23-26, but when he refers to death, it is spiritual death. I hope this helped. =)

Some people say that Hell (Sheol) IS the grave.
But if the soul is immortal, even flames would be better than the sensory deprivation that the grave represents.
