Very simple...you telephone the Sussex County Sheriff's Office at the below listed number and they can inform you if your friend is in jail!
39 High Street
Newton, NJ 07860
Phone: 973-579-0850
By the way...the fact that a person has been arrested is public record however not to be confused with other police reports which are NOT public record. You will not have any problems from the jail as this persons incarceration is a matter of public information!
Best wishes!

You telephone the Prothonotary Office in that county, and ask for the information. You should be able to find them in the phone book under local government. If you don't live near there, you should be able to call information for that area code (xxx) 555-1212, and get the number (where xxx is the area code where the county is you are interested in).
They can provide you with things like arrest records. I have done this over the phone. The reason they give this information out is that it is already legally a matter a public record. Anyone has a public right to request the arrest information on anyone else. Lest you think this sounds like a callous invasion of privacy, hold on. The reason the law is like this is to protect the ARRESTED person. Yes, that's right. The intent is that you cannot be"whisked away in the middle of the night" and not have other people inquire about what happened to you. You cannot be arrested without a public record being made of the incident and the reason, and that record has to be freely accessible.

I am pretty sure that this is a joke, anyhow let me throw some light on your question. First and foremost a jailhouse is not a place where a red carpet is being extended out to. nobody is being invited in they all come in of their own free will. The conditions are limited for you give up the majority of your freedom and rights when you step into this place. You will have to abide to the rules set and try and occupy yourself with whatever activities that they have to offer. Your friends on the outside will also have to adhere to the rules set where visiting hours and phone calls, letter writing, bringing of food etc can be allowed. If the inmate has shown that he is well behave he or she can be release at an earlier time,or set on payroll. The treatment all depends on the inmate him or herself.
