It doesn't matter whether they saw you or not. Nor does it matter if they will eventually come after you. You should go back to the store, and immediately ask to speak to the manager. Tell him exactly what you did, and hand him the money for the thing you stole. Plain and simple.
They know you did it. That's why they made you empty your pockets. They just couldn't prove it, so they had to let you go.
If you are really afraid, call the store first, ask to speak to the manager, tell him what you did, and tell him you want to come in, apologize, and pay for what you took. That way, you don't have to worry that the minute you set foot in there somebody will try to "haul you off" before you have time to explain yourself.
Believe it or not (and this is very hard to do), I'd also tell you parents before you talk to the store. No matter how mad you think they might get, they are the ones who will protect you if the store manager turns out to be a real bastard.
Be patient and sincere when you speak to them. Realize that at first they may get their backs up when you tell them what you did, but they will probably be very relieved and pleased when they understand why you are coming back.
I seriously doubt that anybody is going to call the police for stealing a candy bar. The manager will most likely realize you are just a kid who did something stupid you now regret, and you are trying to make up for it.
After that, you will be able to go to the store without worrying every minute if somebody is going to come up behind you and "nail you" for what you did. You'll be relieved.
And it goes without saying that you'll never do this again, right?
You're lucky it was only a candy bar.

It was a chocolate bar ... they don't care about a chocolate bar, but they probably just wanted to scare you so you won't do it again. Now if you go and steal an iPod or something, then they will come after you.
I'm 15 and I have stolen candy from stores before (when I was like 8), and sometimes they see but it's not like they call the FBI over a teen stealing some candy.
If you really feel bad about it, take it back or if you already ate it lol, just pay them the money back for it.

You should right back there with the candy bar and the 50 cents and own up to what you did. It was wrong and you should grow some character and face the consequences.

You answered it. Definetly don't go there for a while. And since they do know who you are and because they did not go out of their way to go to the cameras to see if you stole the candy bar...I think you are fine.
So don't go for a while, and plainly, just don't steal. Life is less complicated that way.

I think one candy bar won't put you on any store hit list. However, I would advise you to return the bar or bring the money to pay for next time you stop by ...its stupid to shoplift once caught you have to write that down on any job application that you mighgt submitt it makes you look like a petty thief. Thieves don't get the good jobs.

They probably won't nail you next time you visit; I'd offer to pay for the candy bar and tell them you accidentally walked out without paying for it. And QUIT STEALING! It's not worth the juvenile record you're going to get!!!!

Stop now before you get the habit. It's just like smoking. I know people who make good money but they must shop lift to satisfy their habit. You will get caught sooner or later. Then you will go to jail, have a record and perhaps ruin any chance of landing a good job. Stop Now.

Here's the deal. You might get away with it now. But you can't get away with it forever. Here's the saying "play with fire, you're bound to get burnt".
Keep this up and soon you'll steal bigger things, which means bigger punishments. Steal a candy bar, get a fine. Steal a car, go to jail.
Soon, you'll get sloppy and you'll get caught.
