My boyfriend purchased a 1.18 carat princess cut diamond. It's vvs2and the color is a K.Its set on a platinum band because I wanted a solitaire. They diamond was about $4050 and the band came out to around $300.with tax right around 4900 almost 5 grand.something like that. For sure I wanted at least a carat on my ring and I would've loved a color between G-J.I remember comparing a J colored diamond to the K and there was hardly any difference,I couldn't tell which one was which! Was it because of the fact that the K diamond is a vvs2?I'm wondering if my boyfriend got this diamond at a good price. And is K and alright color?I think he should have gone to just a plain 1.00 carat and stuck to something between the color ranges that I wanted though he said that would have made him go over his budget of $5000 .The ring is huge and I love that part but was it wise to sacrifice on the color rather than on clarity.By the way I'm told that the diamond has a very good cut whatever that means.

I sold diamonds for many years so I'll field this one for you. A good cut is always important when it comes to a diamond. It effects everything about the way the diamond looks on your hand. The color isn't great, however, he was absolutely correct in telling you that had he gone up in color (G-H) it would have taken him over budget. If you can't actually see the color (and you said you couldn't tell the difference between J and K) then I wouldn't worry about it.
GHIJ means that the diamond is near colorless, KLMN are slightly yellow. and it goes up from there in terms of yellow coloration in the diamond. If it's a beautiful diamond (it's got great cut, clarity and carat weight) you've got a great stone and no one is going to be whipping out a loupe or a color tray anytime to see what color your diamond is. Most people don't even know the difference. I think you got a good deal and a lovely ring.
Best of luck.

Also, if the carat weight sits exactly at 1.00 it's always more expensive than if it sits a little below or a little above.

If you couldn't see a difference between a K and a G, it's because the cut, and a little bit the clarity, is so good. There is a big difference between a K and a G.

But what he paid for was a Ws2. Why in the world you wanted a ring with that high of a clarity is beyond me. You'd need at least a 10x magnification to see any flaws. You could have gotten a ring that's two clarity grades below this and no one would ever have been able to see the difference. But for such a high clarity, he did get a good price.

You mention that you would have been happy with a 1.00 carat exact diamond. But it's very, very hard to get a diamond that is exactly 1.00 carat. So he got the 1.18 carat over the .98 carat, because he probably thought you'd freak if it wasn't at least 1.00 carat.

I think the color is just about the most important part... The clarity really depends on if you can see the inclusions with the naked eye. BUT if you like the ring and think it is pretty and are excited about getting married.....then just be happy with it! and .18 of a carat would not add that much on to the price, so don't worry about that.

It's hard to say without seeing it but that sounds about right.
What did it appraise for?? It should appraise for more.
