Many tandems (bicycles built for 2) have a crossover system that make the drive between captain and stoker on the left.

It is simply a question of standardisation, like the gear lever being mostly on the left of a motorbike. A road racing bike frame for example always has a lug for the rear deralieur on the right side so you would have to have a frame specially built if you wanted gears on the left.

Almost always yes they are on the right side. There are a few freestle bmx bikes made with left side drive (Haro was doing this for a while, and some others), but most bikes you'll ever see do have the right side drive.

99.8% of all bikes have the drivetrain on the right side. some bikes, like the GT i-drive 6 have an internal drivetrain, and have the chain running on the left side. but these bikes are only rare exceptions, this particular bike cost over $5000

yep. I don't believe there's a good reason for that particular side, but it makes it easier to build bikes if everyone sticks to the same side, so right it is.
