Nestle went on some rampage to remove artificial colourings from Smarties a while back. I can only assume that its impossible to make the blue colour without using nasty chemicals and thats why blue Smarties aren't around anymore!

There still in our boxes here in Canada, and at Valentine's time they make a pink, white and red variety for that time of year, Plus Cadbury does change or phase out colours at points in time, so that could be the issues as the colours that all the candy coating are in the process have an artifical colour base to them, I cannot see why the EU would ban them, but they did some nasty things to the chocolate requirements for the continent, and I know the UK was not happy about that as well.

They took em out cos now Smarties have no artificial colours and there is no natural blue food colouring! =P Rubbish I say! They still have purple Smarties and now white Smarties, why can't they mix em a bit?! AND you don't get the alphabet lids any more! Despite all that though I've been finding myself really addicted lately......maybe cos I found em dead cheap in four packs in Netto......and I had exams........ =/ =D Hehe!

I think they must have gone out of fashion due to the colouring! Now smarties are made with natural colourings- i think they were losing a lot of business and had to change tactics to keep their place in the market!

Smarties now have natural colours only and there was no natural colouring to make the blue colour.

They stopped making them as apparently the colours that they used to make them made kids hyperactive. They are supposed to have been replaced with white ones, but i haven't had any

They couldn't make them without artificial colours and nestle have now pledged to not use artificial colours or flavours in anything.

I think they had to go because the colouring used was artificial, and that was a big no-no.
