Very true, i was inspired by 'top gear'. Great Show last night. But i travelled the states a year ago and wanted to get a corvette. In the end i ended up on greyhound. But id love to go coast to coast in something like a corvette or camaro

How long are you planning to keep the car. If you're here (US) for say two to three weeks, it'll be cheaper to rent a car.
There are between $19.99 to $40.00 per day deals all the time.

A lot depends on the state from which you purchase from. Some may make you show proof of insurance, others may make you sign a form saying your insured, others really won't care. In order to get the car licensed, you will need insurance, and an address....I am not sure what happens when you give them your UK address, I have bought cars while living out of state, and thats not usually a big deal.

However going cross country in a Camaro that costs $1500 will definitely be an adventure. You may find yourself on the Greyhound before getting out of the state you start in. You might find it a bit less adventoursome and a lot more enjoyable renting a car, may end up costing less in the long run.

There are many "car transportation" companies that need drivers to deliver cars cross country. Not only do you not have to spend any money on fuel, but they will pay you to drive them from east to west or vice versa...

How soon do you need it? Did you know there are agency's that need drivers to shuttle cars around the states. You drive them to where they need to go. You get free transportation.

As far as I know, you just have to show proof of insurance and your money is good.
