punishment is meant to teach us?

we get put in timeout for doing something wrong, so we learn not to do it in the future... so then whats the point in punishing us if we dont get a chance to change in the future? wouldnt this be for the sheer joy of it rather then trying to teach us a lesson?

Hey Chippy:
Hell is not a place of fiery torment.
Hell is the grave ....6 feet under.
The dead know nothing (Ecclisiastes 9:5,10).
Nothing means they don't know that flames would be licking them ....however, there arent any flames in hell.
ITS THE GRAVE.

The only purpose I could imagine for sentencing people to an eternity in hell would be to entertain a sadistic and tyrannical God. No lesson could be taught by eternal torture. Personally, I think hell is just a scare tactic used to make people fear what will happen if they don't believe. Conversely, hell the reward or payoff for faith. But there is no evidence for these places being real. So I don't worry about. I just live my life the way I want and hope to die content.

Punishment is meant to teach you that you don't want to wind up in hell. You have plenty of chances to change. But once you die-no more lessons. Whats the point of telling someone they are going to hell if you don't ever put them there.

Its like saying "You wait till your father gets home". We all know that its a threat of punishment but it doesn't mean it will go on forever. A father knows that there is a point at which it goes too far in our society. If he goes too far, then he knows he'll get punished.

What does that say about a god that puts a person in hell for all eternity because he doesn't like what someone did for only 75 years. It doesn't say anything good.

You are mixing discipline and punishment. The purpose of discipline is to teach us. The purpose of Hell is not discipline for building righteousness in us, it is a punishment for not having our debt paid. Since our debt is infinite, the penalty is eternal.

No worries, Chippie! I agree with Uncle Thesis.

Hell is not a Bible teaching. It was devised and added to religious teachings to instill fear in its followers. Satan loves to watch people squirm - not God.

There's no more lessons that God has to teach you. He's taught you too many lessons throughtout history. The flood of Noha is one big example why there's no more lessons for u to learn (AIDS, cancer, tornado). The one and only lesson that's left for human beings to learn is "eternal death".
That's IT.

Being put in hell is more than a punishment, its keeping you away from the believers. Since we are people who will live forever somewhere, the good needs separated from the bad.

Good question. I know what you are trying to get at. God is bad, and you are good right? Actually, God takes no joy from condemning us. He would much rather have all of us in His presence. The problem is, we are the bad ones, not God.

Theft of a gum ball - burn for eternity

Be a genocidal maniac and kill millions - burn for eternity.

Yeah that seems fair.
