Godparents are people you trust to teach your faith to your children, encouraging them in their walk thru their childhood, support system when they need someone to talk to other than us as parents. We are not catholic but have Godparents for our kids.... who have encouraged them thru the years.
Godparents are NOT legal guardians unless you have it in writing and documented that if something happens to you as a parent, that they are to have custody of the child/ren.
It would be important to pick out Godparents who are likeminded in their beliefs as you are...

Catholics aren't the only group to have godparents. Episcopalians have them, too, as well as many other Protestant groups. It is generally a religious gesture. Sometimes, a godparent agrees to help raise the child in the Christian tradition in the event of the parents' deaths. Becoming a godparent is a very serious obligation, not a mere social honor, and should never be taken lightly.

Well, a godparent is someone you choose to watch after your children should something happen to you. Yes, it did originate with Catholics and it is a Catholic practice, but many people do it. Even if you are not Catholic, you will still probably appoint godparents.

It rather defeats the purpose of the term: Technically Godparents are supposed to, in a parent's absence, raise a Catholic child in the manner in which the parents dictated.
But I supposed naming a godparent outside a Catholic family means simply that they want that person to be an active and parental figure in their child's life. <3 It's still a cause to be flattered!

You choose whoever you want to be your child godparents it is not a catholic tradition, you chose some one who your child will look up to just like his /her parent in the future and that person will treat that child no different from theirs.I hope you will make a good choice.

My husband's family are Catholic and they all have God-parents, so we appointed God-parents for our children out of tradition, but we are not Catholic. To us they are simply people that we want our children to be very close to and in the event of our passing they can take an active role in raising them, but not necessarily have custody.

It's just like Christmas or Easter or any other traditions that have been adapted by the non-religious. Make it what you wish.

It is sometimes used as the term for someone who will raise your kids if you die. Regardless of religion.
