Specifically, aparently the Sinclair Broadcast group blacked out 22 of its 57 stations recently to prevent such shows as the Super Bowl from being transmitted on cablesystems including Mediacom Communications. My understanding is that the cable operators are simply pulling the signals out from broadcast signals and relaying on their cables. So I don't know how Sinclair turned off its service without completely shutting down the broadcast to customers who receive the broadcast using antenna.

Cable companies can get their signals from Satellites and over long distance cables. Even if they do get their signals from ordinary broadcasters, they can selectively turn off the signal from going into their cable, without shutting off the orginal broadcast.
