My sister and her family have recently gotten a new persian male kitten. He's a lot of fun, very friendly and happy and healthy. I've personally grown up around cats, but generally around short hairs -- Siamese, American Shorthairs/Calicos, Tabbys, et cetera.

And none of those were really ever dirty around the eyes.

It's not eye gunk IN his eyes, just around them, closer to his nose. If it was IN his eyes, I'd be a bit more worried, but since it's not, I'm a little confused. What a weird place to get dirty. o_O;

Anywho, I'm kinda wondering how he's getting dirty there and what's the best way to clean him around his eyes, or if I should clean around his eyes (I'm usually over at my sister's house during the day, so I'll be spending a lot of time with him).

Any suggestions welcome.

Persians always have eye yuckies because of their long fur. They cant clean their eyes like a normal short hair does. The best way to clean his eyes is to use a soft washcloth and warm water. Gently rub the area until it is clean. On lighter coored Persians the eye yucky will leave a stain.

If teh discharge seems to have a yellowish tinge to it, then he may have an alergy or an infection. If so then you want to get him checked by the vet asap.

Goodluck!

Your question isn't very clear ... is the 'dirt' you are seeing 'runny and dark' or is it 'dry and gritty?' Does it go 'just around the eye' or does it seem to 'run down' the crack between the eye and the side of the cat's nose? I think you should convince your 'sister and her family' to take their new kitten to a VET for a 'general check-up' and 'kitty vaccinations' ... the vet will 'notice' that dirt and give them medicine for it if it needs to be 'treated' ... but if it's not a sign of 'illness' and still bothers you, please 'wipe around the eyes' ONLY if the 'cat doesn't resist' and use only a 'clean, dry, white cloth' like a piece of 'old sheet' or 'toweling' ... and use it ONLY ONCE and make sure the 'rags' get washed in soap and rinsed triply well and dried thoroughly before you use them again.

Persians often have goopy eyes and noses. The discarge might actually be nasal...in either case, you should wipe the area gently with a cotton ball & warm water every day (or at least often enough to keep him clean). Otherwise, it will probably accumulate, may cause him to get a stuffy nose that can lead to a full-fledged infection, and will always be kinda gross.

It's just one of those things that tends to go along with the breed.

My daughter had a beautiful flat faced persian who had this problem-she would clean his face daily and used cotton swabs to get into the wrinkles-it is because their noses are so short and the hair etc around sort of gets in the eyes a little-it is common with short nosed cats and dogs. use clear water-

Persian cats are very prone to eye infections. It is not dirt. You really should take him to the vet and get him eye drops

a mild gray would be appealing. try the recent Almay trio for blue eyes. additionally, yet another trick to make blue eyes pop would be to line them with a depressing blue eyeliner. try Stylie style or moist N Wild

A warm damp soft cloth will wipe it away. Do not use soap or anything near it's eyes.
