Okay Think about it you were elected mayor of your town. The towns council asks you to generate a few ideas for protecting your town's groundwater supply. What are some things you would do to help keep groundwater clean?

Assuming you have contaminated groundwater. Lets say something like Trichloroethlene (TCE) and its degradation products. The EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for TCE is 5 parts per billion (ppb).

TCE is heavier than water, so it is logical that it could migrate from a source several miles away down through the earth to a drinking water aquifer.

If I were mayor and had TCE in my drinking water, there are two things that can be done: 1. Install a large air stripper on the well to strip the TCE and degradation products from the water; 2 abandon the well and drill upgradient of the factory that is the source of the TCE.

I'm not sure what else I would do, not because I can't think of ideas, but because I live in a small municipality through which an important salmon stream runs, and we're already VERY picky about that goes on near the stream. You might find some interesting ideas on the site below.
